Android Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 Firstly, is there any risk of all mail from my domain becoming blocked as a result of spam emails with it in the from line ? I normally recieve a handful of "undelivered mail" with the standard penis enlargement / online pharmacy messages, however over the last few hours the situation has been far worse (and so far hasnt shown any signs of improving), im presently recieving around 10/min totalling 3000+ within a period of a few hours... Also, is there a way to take any action against this? (I seem to remember a site which would analyse mail-headers and attempt to find an isp etc ?) Quote
flashram Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 First step would to make sure that you don't become a victim of comment spam from what you have running on your server. People seem to take great pleasure in looking for sites and causing this to happen on a regular basis. I would suggest also that you lodge a ticket about it and ask for the technical people on TCH to check the logs for you. If they are being generated from your site then yes you will get notified, often the first indication is your site is not accessible. It means an notification is generated automatically to the technical area and is reviewed and action is taken, by the person who looks after those generated tickets. It can also be instigated by web site admins who have setup notifications automatically to inform the suspected hosting company of the issue so it can be rectified quickly otherwise IP's then get blocked as spammers and that takes quite a while to rectify from the support area. But as you are receiving them then your site is sending them to you most likely from comment script notifications you have turned on. One way to handle that is turn off notification about comments being sent to you each time and review your comment area regularly, or turn off comments allowed and they will move on to the next server. Happened on a site for me yesterday, so turned off the facility temporarily and will deal with it in a couple of days. The help desk could help you with determining the best course of action. Quote
Android Posted September 16, 2007 Author Posted September 16, 2007 I do not believe them to be origionating from my hosting account, I seem to simply be recieving the bounced email notifications when the spam emails are denied by the recipitant as addresses at my domain (which I dont use) eg . As far as I knwo all automated comment systems should be disabled on my site too although I will double-check this. Does anyone know of anything I can do in this situation? I will send a support ticket now. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted September 16, 2007 Posted September 16, 2007 I'd certainly set the default mail address to :fail: to make sure you don't get lots of bounces from none existent accounts. The ticket desk will be able to give you any specifics for your setup. Quote
