Quite often when I try to upload a large number of files (e.g., vBulletin) to my account via FTP, I get an error in SmartFTP (approx. 10 minutes into the transfer) that states something to the effect: Host failed to open connection or Host closed connection.

Any ideas why this might be?

Edit: It just happened again. Here is the message in SmartFTP:

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

The other thing you can do is zip your individual files into a single file and upload that. Then using the File Manager in cPanel extract the contents of the zip file.

Are you using a PASV connection?

I switch back and forth between PASV and not PASV each time the FTP'ing fails...even though I don't really know the difference between the two are.

I might have to give that a try.

Thanks.

Try Filezilla as an alternative for ftp program. I have similar problems and it seems to work better.

Coincidentally I tried Fielzilla just prior to getting your message.

I can't figure out why, but it uploaded several times faster and it did not have errors.

How can just using a different FTP program increase speed and reduce errors?

Anyway, thanks for writing.
