Given the proactive attitude of TCH, I wouldn't worry too much. But this is just another reason why one makes regular backups!

Actually, TCH security measures aren't enough if you use weak passwords on your account/website, have badly coded scripts running on your website, etc...

There's an old saying in the hackers' world that goes something like this:

"It's no use to spend all your money on your front door if you don't even lock your back door."

So basically, never mind TCH, they do their job right.

The question is: do you?...

Probably nothing to fear, especially here!! Besides, the grand prize? 500MB of free storage.

Gee, that oughta get them running for the starting gates eh?

NOT

boxturt, the thing is that those 500 MB are probably on an anonymous webserver outside any internet/software/web-related jurisdiction, like in Russia, if I'm not mistaken. At least, it used to be, just a couple of years ago.

This means you can have a webserver there and do whatever you want with it, store content that would be illegal in other countries, etc...

But aside from that, you're forgetting the very essence of hacking: the challenge. ;)

What hackers (NOT crackers; these are two different kinds of people) like is the challenge and the opportunity to learn more.

This is what will motivate most of the people who will participate.

So remember that the true prize of such a contest is not 500 Mb of webspace but the challenge itself.

500mb to a hacker? Thats a freakin joke.

A real hacker can have 5 terabytes of T3 or OC connected storage in less than 45 minutes.

Here is my take.

The only secure server is -

"A server that is not connected to the internet, powered off, locked in a safe and no one knows the combination, burried 60 feet underground, in a tunnel, in the desert, next to a oil field, in the antartic and the power supply removed."

Am i concerned about security? Every day.

Do I back up servers? Twice a day.

Do i back up my personal sites, every day.

Just my two cents worth!

"Security? Whats that"

Backdoors are meaningless, 90% of all hacks are done right thru the front door.

As you said, update your scripts!

What I meant with "backdoor" was that people usually worry too much about just one thing and completely forget about others.

In this case, I was trying to tell fivetofollow that he should worry about what he has in his site, like scripts made by him and such stuff, not about TCH's security measures ;)
