Mrs. Muddled Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 I can't get these files to stop loading on start up. I have a new Canon scaner that I've installed. I don't need any of these files. I have had this mess on my start up for MONTHS! I've deleted all the sj652 files except two that wont allow me to delete. The two files are: hpupdate.exe and newdev.dll http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Nan...utthesedown.jpg Edit: TCH-Bruce - converted image to link. TCH-Thomas Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Please check if they are checked in msconfig: Click Start Click Run Type "msconfig" without the quotes Go to last tab called startup in english systems I think And see if the files are listed there. If so, uncheck them Restart the computer Quote
TCH-JimE Posted August 17, 2006 Posted August 17, 2006 Also, locate and download a program called "Hijackthis!" This is a brillaint tool which helps remove spyware too. Be warned, it can easily mess up your system, but its one I use every day JimE Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted August 17, 2006 Author Posted August 17, 2006 I don't have those files showing in my msconfig startup. Jim - that hijack this sounds pretty scary! Are you sure that this is something "I" should mess with? There is one file showing in the start up that I'm not sure about ... it sez it's an update .... would this be part of the HP stuff? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Nana2/startupview.jpg Edit: TCH-Bruce - converted image to link. Mrs. Muddled Posted August 18, 2006 Author Posted August 18, 2006 Jim, I've been reading CNET and PC Tools etc about Hijack This. It certainly appears to be highly regarded. I just installed Spy Sweeper. I also have F-Secure running. Wouldn't having Hijackthis running too be a bit of overkill? I'm somewhat concerned that I would "mess up my system." Quote

Which site would you recommend I check out for the best guidance about what to delete? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 I generally use the tasklist on http://www.answersthatwork.com/ or google my startup problems. As for hijackthis... I have only used it a few times, but it is not a program that runs all the time. You will need to start it yourself. So having it installed will do no harm, since you decide when to run it. I haven´t read it all but on the following address, there seems to be a good hijackthis tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html Quote
JTD Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 You can also remove any references to your old scanner in your registry. if you are compfortable doing so. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted August 18, 2006 Posted August 18, 2006 Hijack is a program that as thomas says, does not run all the time, you choose when and where you want to run it. You can do no harm in installing it and running it. If you want, you can post the log file here and I can take a look a for you, that way you won't do any harm to your computer JimE Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted August 18, 2006 Author Posted August 18, 2006 Okay Jim ... I'm going to do that. Hang on a sec while I figure out how to do it without putting a huge photo on this post. I get in BIG trouble for that. ok - done. Hmm? Don't see it in the preview. Click on this and this and hopefully the two files will show up. Quote

I hate to admit it ... but I don't think I am qualified to use Hijack this. You may have noticed I tend reinforce this opinion on my posts. I'm pretty smart - but my "smarts" sometimes don't include my computer. I have bookmarked both sites and I know I will use the answersthatwork often. Thank you for your suggestions. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted August 19, 2006 Author Posted August 19, 2006 You can also remove any references to your old scanner in your registry. if you are compfortable doing so. Oooh boy. Messin' with the registry. Hmm? Sounds like a place I shouldn't go. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Mrs. Muddled, Running Hijackthis will do no harm. It´s what you do with the stuff in the report that it gives you that may give you a problem. If you want, take Jim suggestion and publish the report here and we will take a look on what you can remove and what you shouldn´t. To do this, please do the following. 1. Go to: http://www.merijn.org/downloads.html 2. Scroll down to where you can download it and save it to your computer. 3. Locate the file hijackthis.zip and unzip it. 4. Doubleclick the file in the unzipped folder. 5. Click the button "Do a system scan and save a logfile" 6. The result will show up in notepad and then copy and paste it here, then we go from there. stevevan Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 Oooh boy. Messin' with the registry. Hmm? Sounds like a place I shouldn't go. Only as an absolute LAST resort. Follow Thomas' suggestion first and let's exhaust all other possibilities. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted August 19, 2006 Author Posted August 19, 2006 Ok - will follow instructions. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted August 19, 2006 Author Posted August 19, 2006 I've got it. Is there anything in this BIG list that I should NOT make available to persons unknown on this website? Before I copy and paste? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 19, 2006 Posted August 19, 2006 No, I don´t think so, but you can pm me or TCH-JimE (I suppose) and we can take a look privately, if you want. Quote
Mrs. Muddled Posted August 20, 2006 Author Posted August 20, 2006 I've sent you a PM - awaiting further instructions. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted August 20, 2006 Posted August 20, 2006 Hello Mrs. Muddled, I think I found something regarding your original question about not being able to remove the scanner. Please see this. I did not read the whole page, but it looks promising. Also, I am sending you a reply of the pm soon. Quote

Interesting to discover that I am not the only one left with the annoying HP ScanJet file. Take a look here for the file that's left. At least I appear to have rid the compute of most of the mess. The box still opens on the desktop .... asking for something it thinks needs to be installed from the e: drive. Quote
