makaveli Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 ok so i have the ip address of some idiot who is constantly spamming my blog comments and Viper Guestbook with somthing that annoys me and also brings down the image of the site. i have got the IP and have Banned it from Wordpress and Viper, what will the screen say to this user when they try and post as i want to be subtle, as i cant be bothered with silly phone calls, SMS messages and what not. if i banned them via CPanel what would happen, what message would they get, they are all local and use the same ISP as me so could i ban just the first 3 sections (12.34.46) of the IP? im mainly concerned with what error message they will get as this is really annoying me and trying to bring down the image of my site and bring back somthing i dont believe happened and is a story. its not enough to warrant any action other that that of mine. Thanks A Million if you can help me Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 they are all local and use the same ISP as me If you ban your ISP, how will you get to see your site? Quote
makaveli Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 could i not make an exception to the last (.123) of ther ip and allow me. but that is a good point!!! i guess ill just have to ban them as they come Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 I would recommend that you switch guestbook scripts to something that offers better support for spam control. You say you run Wordpress and are getting comment spam there too. Google for Spam Karma 2 and install it. Then say goodbye to comment spam on your blog. Quote
makaveli Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 (edited) its kinda not "bot" spam its "freinds" who think it would be a laugh to use and abuse my webspace which is like a personal home to me. posting about silly things that bear no relevance. the main thing i was wondering is what does a user see when banned? a big screen saying "banned" or does it look like a tech error (e.g a 404) as if they know ive blocked them they will turn to annoying me on the phone. i have already banned 1 from viper and have changed wordpress so i must approve comments. i am lookin for an alternate guestbook though, dont know where to get an easy one to install and manage from, but im lookin it is indeed, a sad day when supposed freinds try and crash your website and take the mick out of you on it. of course i could go to his and trash it but what would be the point in that. it is the classic snowball effect 1 starts, the other freind reads it and says "lol yeah" anothe goes "aye, but it wasnt as funy as when....." TCH-Bruce Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Thomas already pointed to a thread explaing what a banned user would see and it is a "403 Forbidden" error. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted June 22, 2006 Posted June 22, 2006 Sounds like its time to re-evaluate your definition of "friends". If they are really "friends" you can ask them to stop and tell them if they don't you will report them to their ISP for abuse and have their accounts terminated. You have logs and pretty much enough proof in the logs for the ISP to use to identify who it is. Maybe the threat of having their accounts terminated will be enough to get them to stop. If not then you can try this route and see if the ISP will take action. If they do take action be prepared to have fewer friends, but who needs friends like these anyway. Quote
makaveli Posted June 22, 2006 Author Posted June 22, 2006 Sounds like its time to re-evaluate your definition of "friends". already have, i mean you gotta be to at least trust them, at the mo i trust them as far as i could throw 'em as for ISP abuse reports, im monitoring traffic by them, cause this site despite the blog being personal and every thing will eventually be a bit like a portfolio and "about me" type affair where i could point people to. im all game for a laugh but degregation of people is not on, mind some of this is coming from someone who, owns sites linking to some "NSFW" content, which is a little sad if you ask me, silly students should get a real job sorry bout not reading the other post, i loaded it in another tab and shut it down in a moment of confusion Quote
designdroide Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I have tried to ban People through my WP with a plugin. It does not work. I do not have a .htaccess file. and that seems like how I should do my IP banning. how do i get one? Quote
GvilleRick Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 If you have a TCH account you can add the IP addresses in your cPanel under the IP Deny feature. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Welcome to the forum, designdroide. Quote
TCH-Don Posted December 13, 2006 Posted December 13, 2006 Welcome to the forums designdroide When you use cpanel > IP deny it will create or add to your .htaccess file. Quote
