Ruby On Rails And Fastcgi

Recommended Posts

Guest Doug Mikkelson

I'm looking for a new host - and was recommended to look at TCH by some cow-orkers.

I'm looking to develop some object-oriented, database-driven web applications.

I would like a server that supports fastCGI and the Rails application framework.

Do TCH servers include installations of these development tools? If not, why?

Welcome to the forums.

Currently Ruby on Rails is not available on any of the shared servers and there are no plans to install it in the short term.

Would one be allowed to install it on one's own dedicated server?

Welcome to the forums.

Currently Ruby on Rails is not available on any of the shared servers and there are no plans to install it in the short term.

This query was made and responded to 5 years ago in 2006. Has the status changed since then or is Ruby on Rails still unavailable on the shared hosts?

I'm wondering since I have and/or am responsible for a number of sites hosted at TCH and I have a new one where the use of RoR was requested by the client (who does not yet have a site) and I wanted to steer them to TCH.

Thank You.

I am sorry, but RoR is not supported on our shared servers and we have no near plans to enable them on shared servers.

If we have any change in plans regarding RoR, we shall post on this forums.

Thank you for the fast reply. I am now totally confused about if it is supported or not since after I had posted my question here (due to my log-in not having taken and thus suppressing the Post Sales topic) I DID log in and looked in the Post Sales topic and found a thread (What's The Word On Ruby/rails?) that said the RoR support was announced and implemented back in 2006. Was the support withdrawn after that announcement and thread? Or is it the case that only non-shared servers got the support and the planned shared server roll never occurred?

Thank you.

If my memory is with me this morning, I think I recall that RoR was withdrawn.

Thank you. Given the original thread in the Post-Sales section saying it was being rolled out, I can accept that it was subsequently withdrawn as the explanation why it is not supported. Now I know and understand the confusion about the availability status.
