Robmonster Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Hi there, Can someone please explain to me how the email aging feature works within Cpanel? RM Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 According to the documentation: Instructions Mail aging is the process in which e-mails will be removed from the server automatically, upon successful log out of a pop3 session. This deletion will only occur if the messages are older then a specified amount of days. It looks to me that it only works if you are using a POP3 client and the POP3 client is not set up to delete email from the server. It will then delete email messages older than the number of days you specify. However most people that POP mail also delete the mail from the server at the same time. So I guess if you wanted to POP mail from several machines you could set them all up to not delete and add a specified number of days to keep mail after it's been received and it would automatically be deleted. TCH-JimE Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 (edited) Hello Robmoster, Email aging is where the email arrives and then stays on the server for X amount of time before being deleted. Say you have 5 days in the cpanel, then the email is deleted 5 days after it arrives, even if you haven't read it! Edit: Doh, beaten to it! Jimuni Edited February 27, 2006 by Jimuni Quote
Robmonster Posted February 27, 2006 Author Posted February 27, 2006 To disable this do I set it to 0 days? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 Not sure, never activated it on any of my accounts. If that doesn't work open a ticket with the help desk and ask them to disable it for you. Quote

I think I am confused...is email really deleted if not read? From documentation and Bruce's post I presumed that email is only deleted if downloaded by pop3 client and it is then left on server for x days. What if I am on vacation and never check email, via pop3 or webmail, for more than x days, is the email still deleted? If that is the case, not sure why the setting would only work with pop3 clients? TCH-Andy Posted December 20, 2006 Posted December 20, 2006 It is deleted "upon successful log out of a pop3 session.". So, if you have set it to a week, and then don't login for a month ... they will still be there. At the end of the month (when you connect with POP3 to download your emails) it will delete all those older than the week you have set it to - once you have downloaded them. It won't check if you have read them or not in your email client - it will just delete them as you have downloaded them, and they are more than a week old. Personally - I just use the setting in the email client I use, rather than the option in cpanel. Quote
