oldhag
I'd like a developer I'm working with to be able to check out my site, but I don't want him to have the power to edit anything or affect anything at this point -- he just wants to check out how my files are configured with Word Press to see how to upgrade without affecting anything -- and find out what he needs to troubleshoot or change, style- and plugin-wise. How can I let him in just to peek and read, but not write or delete anything? I guess sending him the backup files is another option, but I'm wondering if there's another. TCH-Bruce
There is no way to give someone read only access to your web space. If you give them your username and password is the only way they can access your cPanel or use FTP.

Thanks, Bruce~ So that definitely means I cannot set up users with different levels of administrative access -- or different logins to my cpanel? Also, what do you think about the idea of giving them a copy of the backup files so they could see everything?
Deverill
Remember if you give them backups of your databases then they may be able to read your Word Press passwords. I'm not sure if they are stored plain or encrypted but I use Coppermine for photos and they store passwords in the clear. Just something else to consider. TCH-Bruce
Well you could set up a user in Wordpress and give them admin provledges but that won't give them access to your web space where they could upload/delete/add files to your site. They could change settings in your Wordpress but not access files on the server.
TCH-Dick
I know this is not going to help with your issue and may be a bit of a blanket statement. BUT... If you don't feel comfortable allowing your developer to have access to your site then its time to find a new developer.
