Hello.

I am working on getting a place to backup my computer and store some of my files.

What is better: Burning DVD's or Storing on an External Hard Drive?

Thanks,

Both are good

more important is how you backup

what program and how easy is it to rebuild your computer with a new hard drive.

I use Nero backup that came with my DVD burner

it can make drive images on to bootable DVD's

I have a USB 80 gig drive for file backups that is easy to use.

Yeah both are good. Actually both is best; it depends ultimately on just how valuable your files are to you. If you place a significant value then you should use both just to be safe.

According to the latest reports on DVD/CD media they are recommending that people use external hard drives to backup. Of course I still use DVDs to back up my systems.

Found a free backup program called WinBackup 1.86 which works really well.

I second the idea of using external hard drives.

I was going to make backups today. There was some DVD´s (RW) that I had forgotten write on the cover what they contained so I had to check them before I erased them.

They were broken and I had only used them one time so far. :)

I amglad it was a backup and not a restore I was going to do. :)

There's a good discussion about backup media that happened in the forums recently. It may give you more insight into the dvd vs hd question.

I backup daily (incrementals) to a third party hard drive.

Every month or two I will burn the data to a few DVDs to

sock away and now that I will not lose more than that...

Hello,

My 2 pence:

Hard Drives - Very good and the ideal solution. However, having just seen a mates external hard drive fail, its not infalable. I suggest having two hard drives, one you backup every day or week and then backup again once a month on the other hard drive.

DVD Small storage space compared to a hard drive, but cheaper and better for small storage. Again, double backups are recommended!
