dallara Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I am totally new to this but slowly understanding......I think. I have been creating pages using NVU and I am just about complete. I have yet to register a domain name although I have one in mind and it is available. I also have yet to choose a host but like everything I am reading here. My question is on transfering my pages up to the host once I am set. I downloaded Filezilla, but does cpanel do the exact same thing and for a complete beginner, which would you recommend? Thanks, I appreciate it. Quote
crippen Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 You can use cpanel for uploading files, or you can use an FTP program like Filezilla. Personally I use FTP for most of my basic file-transfer operations, and especially transferring large files or large numbers of files, but it is also convenient to have cpanel's File Manager around for quickly getting a file or two uploaded. You can even do some quick editing if you need to on a file with the File Manager. I think TCH would be a great choice for you. You can be assured you will get responses to any questions you may have here in the forums, and the servers are stable, not overloaded from my experience. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Welcome to the forum dallara cpanel is the "control panel" for your site, so you use it for setting up email accounts, looking at web stats, setting up FTP accounts etc. For uploading your site, I'd use FTP and think Filezilla would be fine for uploading your site Quote
dallara Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 Thankyou both for the responses. It sounds like the Filezilla is the way to go. One more question in regards to it. When you have uploaded the pages and lets say you wish to make a change to one of the pages. I would still have all the pages on my HD, would I make the changes and then resend the pages and would they just overwrite the old page, for instance my index.html page. If I were to send a second index.html page would it overwrite the existing one? Again, thanks. Quote
stevevan Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Welcome to the forum dallara! I too prefer using an FTP program to upload my files. There are several out there to choose from...just depends on what you like. Quote
TCH-Don Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Welcome to the forums dallara You can also use NVU to publish with file > publish be sure to set the publishing address to ftp://your-domain.ext/public_html/ Quote
TCH-Andy Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 In answer to your other question. It would overwrite the old file, and then everyone would see the new pages. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Welcome to the forum, dallara. Any other questions, don´t hesitate to ask. Quote
dallara Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 Thanks alot, you are all a great help. Don, I did read up on NVU's "publishing" so maybe I will attempt using that before filezilla. Again, thankyou for the info. Quote
TCH-Don Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 You will still need an ftp program as NVU does not always remove unused files. and if you publish to a sub directory you have to create it first. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Welcome to the forum, dallara. I also prefer uploading with an FTP program as cPanel does not make it easy to upload a large number of files at one time. Quote
