dpkyte Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 I want to back up some sensitive data, Just wondering HOW secure is it if i put it at the same level as the www, meaning it will not be under the www subdirectory. Who all has access to this and how secure is it ?? Quote
MikeJ Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Only your account has access to your parent directory. But I still wouldn't generally recommend backing up "sensitive" data to a shared web server ever. Quote
TCH-Mark Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Hello, Yeah I recommend that you download the data from the server and maybe add a password to the file and store it on a CD/DVD or like Don says to a USB jump drive. Quote
dpkyte Posted January 18, 2006 Author Posted January 18, 2006 I currently do back up to a jump drive, however I am one of those "backup freaks" that needs a ton of copies. Since I have all this space, why not use it. Thx for the thoughts. Quote
TCH-Mark Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Hello, Ah that makes it more clear, storing it above your public_html (www) directory should be safe but again if its sensitive data there is nothing better but to download it and store it on the jump drive, your hard drive and DVD. Quote
paultwang Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 If you keep your sensitive data well-encrypted, it is statistically impossible to read your data without the key. Quote
stevevan Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 If you keep your sensitive data well-encrypted, it is statistically impossible to read your data without the key. But if it's THAT sensative, why take the chance...no matter how remote? (just my opinion! ) Quote
Deverill Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Paultwang posted some helpful links to free encryption software this morning... just in case you missed the topic. If you encrypt it with a good secure encryption first then it really doesn't matter if anyone does happen to get it - although the servers are as secure as it is practical to make them. Quote
