Guest TJ Robertson Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 I can't find anything that answers this question for me, please help. I bought your starter web hosting, and now I need my domain name Everylist.com to point to it. (it would be very unacceptable to do a web redirect to http://207.44.248.87/~everyli/). I was hosting the site from my house, so I have the domain name with No-ip.com. On their site I can 'Manage' my domain name (everylist) and set it to be either an absolute IP address, or do a web redirect. So how can I get it to go to the IP plus /~everyli? It would be a disaster to have it redirect to the ugly looking format. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 (edited) Hi TJ Robertson, Do you have the ability to change/add/modify the nameservers that your domain name will have? This may be in an advanced area or DNS area. Jim Edited June 4, 2003 by Jimuni Quote
TCH-JimE Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 Hi, Having had a look through there FAQ, it would seem you should have access to the domain servers. At present your domain points to: Domain servers: ns2.no-ip.com ns1.no-ip.com ns3.no-ip.com It needs to change so the above point to our name servers. Unless you can find a bit in the panel for your domain name, I suggest you email them pointing out what you wish to do. Jim Quote
Guest TJ Robertson Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 I was looking at the Apache faq and it talks about 'Name Based Virtual Hosting'. I get the impression that a domain name resolves to an IP address, then appache looks at the domain name to determine which directory to serve the pages from. In that case, couldn't my domain name resolve to your machines IP and then appache could see that it got there via everylist.com and decided to serve from the /~everyli directory? Perhaps I'm on the right track and a further requirement is for their name servers to be your name servers... or whatever it is your asking for. In any event, I sent our discussion to their support staff. Thank you so much for being responsive. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 Hi, Having not looked at the apache FAQ in some time, I can't comment on what you have quoted. However, what I do know for 100% sure is that for your domain name to just be www.everylist.com and to point to the correct web space on our servers, you must change the name servers to ours. We can provide these for you should you need them. Once you have this set up, anyone typing in your domain name gets directed to the name servers who then point it to the right IP address with the corresponding /~username (which I believe is what you are talking about). The user of course will never see that bit and will just see the www.everylist.com Let us know if we can be of more assistance. Jim Quote
Guest TJ Robertson Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 Ok! I set the name server to be the two nameservers that was sent to me in the tch email. I also set everylist.com to point to the IP of the machine on which I have my tch account. Should that be it? I guess I'll find out when it does/dosen't resolve correctly in a few days. Quote
TCH-Rick Posted June 4, 2003 Posted June 4, 2003 Looks like it is working correctly. Link to DNS search Quote
