What Is An Ftp Server?

I understand what an FTP Client is but what is an FTP SERVER? How is it any different than any other server?

In short it is a computer responsible for serving any kind of files, via the File Transfer Protocol to FTP clients. The server is really just the computer that is holding the files that you get with your client.

"FTP Server" may also be used to refer to the program that sits on the computer Rob is talking about and talks to the FTP Client when it connects. It just sits and listens for someone to talk to it, verifies password information, and "serves" files to the client when you ask nicely (with the right passwords).

I had come across an FTPing program (client) that also had a download for their FTP Server program and I wasn't quite sure what they were talking about...now I know!
