Yes that is right to some degree. Any written form of communication is protected to a certain degree automatically. However if published without an offical copyright it maybe challenged and one stands to loose their work if it goes to court. Remember the best way is to "offically copyright". David hit it right on the head.

 

However, names and the like can be issued a mark. The Trademark can than be used to protect names from infringements. When discussing names "service mark" is used.

 

A service mark is the same as a trademark, except that it identifies and distinguishes the source of a service rather than a product

 

A copyright protects an original artistic or literary work.
