001 java.net.UnknownHostException: ftp.mrsmuddled.com

This is the error I am getting from Google when I try to bring my Google blog onto my new website (that is not open yet).

What am I doing wrong?

Scratch that last post...I did some further checking of the domain name, and it does not appear to be resolving properly. You should submit a ticket to the Help Desk and have them investigate this issue for you.

I have sent an email to "Eric" in support. I'm still sitting here, unable to progress further. Eric apparently found my original email confusing ... so I may not be expressing the problem adequately.

This is probably something really obvious to those who have originally started with a Google blog and then decided to get a webpage of their own.

Gail has been great at sending me emails with directions ... but I think we are stumped at the moment ... and I don't want to keep bugging her.

On the Welcome email that comes from TCH there is a number next to my login name. Is that going to work just the same as a name when I'm filling in the blanks?

Anyhow ... I need to be walked through this set up ... so I can at least get started with my webpage. :)

First if you have not done this

please open a help desk ticket to the techs to find out why your domain does resolve yet.

That is the proper method of support.

This way there is a record that all techs can see.

The numbers in your welcome e-mail is the ip address of your server

and with that you can use an ftp program to connect to your account

set the ftp up as

ftp.your-server-ip/~your-cpanel-name

remote directory: public_html

user: your-cpanel-name

passive: yes

you can also open your cpanel by going to

your-server-ip/cpanel

and use your tch-cpanel name and password.

After your domain resolves change the ftp log-in to

ftp.your-tch-site

Don,

I am unsure what to enter as my server IP .... Perhaps this "welcome" letter that I am looking at is not what you are describing. There is nothing on it that looks like what you are referring to. Is the header YOUR ORDER CONFIRMATION?

Can you type out EXACTLY what you mean, using my new website name www.mrsmuddled.com?

MM

Ok, but did you open the help desk ticket about your domain?

in the welcome e-mail

you will see a number like

69.50.221.206

to access your cpane use

http://69.50.221.206/cpanel

and then type in your tch cpanel name from your welcome e-mail

and the password

this will take you to your cpanel

for ftp use

ftp.69.50.221.206

in your ftp program for the domain

remember to add to the remote directory

public_html

And to view your site before the domain name works

use http://69.50.221.206/~cpanelname

Your order confirmation is not the same as the Welcome email that you will receive after you account is provisioned.

Hi Don and Bruce:

It appears I have no welcome letter.

I have tried accessing the help desk and my posts are rejected ... I can't fill in one of the blanks so it bounces me out.

The only welcome letter I have is the Welcome to Domain by Proxy.

I can't find anything with numbers like you describe Don. None of them have dots in between the numbers.

Hi MM,

It appears I have no welcome letter.
If you have used a free service like hotmail or yahoo, etc when you registered, you need to check the trash/spam box since these kinds of services are known to sort these emails a little wrong.

This may be the username + password fields doing this. Since you have not received the welcome letter, you don´t have a user/password. Just enter "unknown" in those fields.

Mrs Muddled, did you purchase a hosting account? That is a separate transaction from purchasing a domain name.

It's sounding like you purchased a domain name and that is the only confirmation email that you have.

I have checked and there is no record that you have purchased a hosting account yet.

You can sign up for a hosting plan here.

Well, I think you might have given me the directions I needed.

Somehow I managed to totally avoid the actual "sign up" with TCH. I have no idea how this happened, considering the eleventy zillion pieces of paper I have surrounding me at this desk ... all of which have to do with either pay pal or TCH!

So, now I await THE WELCOME LETTER that y'all have been referring to ... then I shall slip back into oblivion (hopefully).

Y'know what? It's just too much information and my head is too small. :thumbup1:

Don't worry about it

it can be confusing when you are starting out for the first time

with all the unfamiliar terms and things to do.

But once you get a page successfully published

you will be able to concentrate on building your site.

Let us know if you need help when you get that welcome e-mail.

And don't forget the setup for an ftp program or whatever you are going to use

ftp.your-tch-domain

remote directory: public_html

passive mode; yes

Hi MM,

Did you get signed up with TCH for a hosting plan yet? As the others say, don't worry about feeling confused. I have had a web site for close to 2 years now and I still have to stop and think about the various terms and their meaning.

You are learning each day - remember - one step at a time. Every one of us here had to start at the beginning at some point.

Let us know how you are making out.

Hi Gail et al:

Well, you're not going to believe it: I actually have my very own mrsmuddled.com website ... and it's working!

I am dreadfully pleased. :D

I really must apologize (although I don't know why ... it's just something I do) for blathering on ... and on about my inability to "get started." I was reading so much "stuff" my brain was hurting. Apparently I was missing the forest for the trees. I really thought I was all signed up and ready to roll. Nope. I had just signed up for my domain name and my pay pal and ... something else that I've already forgotten. Could be two weeks at girl guide camp for all I know!

Somehow I'd totally missed the fact that I needed to sign up with TCH and pay the monthly bill! Arghh! No wonder I couldn't figure out what the heck everyone was talking about when they'd give me suggestions. I'd never received a WELCOME letter! I was still "un-welcome" for Pete's sake!

Anyhow, now I'm on first base and the rest will come ... bit by bit.

MM

P.S. I lied when I said I would probably disappear. I wont. I'm too dumb to be out here all alone. :)

Well, like Thomas said, it wasn't that you were "unwelcome"... it just wasn't official yet! Now you are OFFICIALLY welcome!! :(

So, OFFICIALLY, welcome to the family!! ;)

Hi MM,

Yippee - you did it! :clapping: Way to go - now doesn't that make you feel good.

I kept checking your blog the last few days to see if you got it moved okay. I didn't realize you had not purchased a hosting plan. :clapping: No wonder my directions wouldn't work for you.

After you get working on your blog for awhile, we will get you working on some other web pages.

Cheers,

Hi Gail! Thanks!

How do I put the stories I put in my blog in the order I want them to appear on my website? I don't want them listed in the order I posted them.

Posted

Hi MM,

I looked in the Help files for blogger and didn't see anything.

However, you can 'Edit' the date of the posts, and then the posts will show accordingly. Just go to the 'Edit' tab in your post and you will see you can change the date at the bottom and then publish the post again. If you would like a post titled 'About Me' to show first in order - make sure there are no posts dated prior to that date. Posts will show as per the date of the post from what I can tell. I just moved the last post I did by changing the date (I have since moved it back) and this does work.

Some one else may have a better idea.

Okay, I'll give that a try.

I just posted another story and discovered when I went to review it that the photo is no longer appearing. I'm getting the dreaded red X. My photos in my other posts are all fine. I had put this particular story into draft mode because I want it at the end of my blog rather than at the beginning.

Why am I getting the d-r-x all of a sudden on that story?

Well, having said that ... and eager to press on ... I leapt into the breach once again and altered the dates on my post so that they would read in order ... which of course has completely messed up my archives (I think that's what they are) ... now the list that appears beside the posts is whacko!

I checked my website and one of the posts is GONE and the latest one ... that suddenly has its picture in place of the d-r-x ... is not even listed!

I think I'll just go out in the garden and eat worms.

Hi MM,

I would think if you do change the dates of the posts to get them in the order you want - then the Current Post list (on the Side Bar) would change accordingly. It would also alter your Archives.

Another thought - what you could do is Delete your posts and start over. FIRST, copy and paste your posts into Notepad or whatever editor you use, and SAVE each post individually. Then you could start over - you would not have to retype the post - just copy and paste the stories back into the blogger software in the order you wish them to be viewed.

MM, now that you have your blog successfully moved to TCH, you might want to post your questions re your Blog here in the Blog Forum. Perhaps more people might see your posts (particularly anyone who uses blogger or is familiar with the software) and can also make suggestions that have worked for them. Just a thought.

Cheers,

Gail
