LeeGoldsmith Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Hi When I go to the main page of cPanel for my web site I see that my disk usage has not changed in a long time, shows 27+ megs used. When I go to disk usage in cPanel the amount used in public_html is 36+ megs. Why are they different??, and should I submit a ticket to get this fixed?? Thanks Lee Quote
tomowa Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 Hi Lee, I had the same expireance, discussed here http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/i...showtopic=19110. It involves the fact that 'cpanel' does not count disk usage of files owned by 'nobody', as opposed to file's owned by your user name. If you have sripts running, such as 'Gallery' as I do, Gallery, (which is in fact the server) is the owner of the files, and thus cpanel does not count them in your disk usage reported on your main cpanel page. Yet it does show the true disk usage when you look at 'disk usage'. Go figure. Tech staff can go and change the ownership of the files from 'nobody' to your 'username', but then your scripts will throw errors until you go through and CHMOD the effected files to 777. In the above mentioned thread, David developed a script to do a 'batch' CHMOD change, which Gail used on Coppermine Gallery, which could probably be modifed to use on different scripts, but for me, no time to play as such HTH, Tom Quote
LeeGoldsmith Posted July 13, 2005 Author Posted July 13, 2005 Thanks Tom I can live with it. It's not that hard to go to disk usage and see the correct amount there. Thanks again Lee Quote
EdInJapan Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Sorry to bump this old thread, but I have a follow-up question. I have exactly the same issue running Gallery with the user set to "nobody". While I don't mind checking "real" disk usage with the control panel for doing so, I worry that my actual usage is not getting counted in my available quota. I am close to half of my available space, and if I do a full backup I could easily blow over the top. I don't want to cheat, nor do I want to get shut down or cause the rest of the people on my server any issues. Any info on whether the "nobody" ownerships are getting counted in the quota? Quote
TweezerMan Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 Any info on whether the "nobody" ownerships are getting counted in the quota? As Tom said above, CPanel does not include files owned by 'nobody' in the 'Disk Usage' total on the CPanel main page. Quote
EdInJapan Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Tom, Thanks for the response, but I guess my question was not clear. Here it is rephrased: Does this mean I am "cheating" TCH by having directories with an owner name other than the one TCH gave me? Put another way, if I am on the 450 MB plan, and I have 350 MB worth of stuff owned by the name TCH gave me, it is possible for me to have another 300 MB worth of stuff owned by "nobody" so that TCH would not be aware that I had exceeded my limit by 200 MB? I don't want to be dishonest here, but I know asking the helpdesk to chown all my nobody directories to my TCH name is going to break my script. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted November 4, 2005 Posted November 4, 2005 Does this mean I am "cheating" TCH by having directories with an owner name other than the one TCH gave me? In reality, yes, you are alloted the amount of disk space your plan was set up for. If your account is audited and you are using more disk space than you are paying for your account may be suspended. So far my total is not over my quota, but I'll have to see if I can get the script issue worked out or have to manually check the disk usage each time. Thanks for the reply. Quote
