I am looking for a webhost for reasonably sized forum, and am considering TotalChoice Hosting as a serous possibility, but I have a question about your Acceptable Use Policy:

"TotalChoice Hosting accounts operate on shared resources. Excessive use or abuse of these shared network resources by one customer may have a negative impact on all other customers. Misuse of network resources in a manner which impairs network performance is prohibited by this policy and may result in termination or suspension of your account without notice."

From what I've read, in many cases, words like these can mean that a site will be shut down if it experiences an excessive amount of traffic, even if the amount of bandwidth used by the site in question per month is lower than that of the purchased plan.

Since this forum uses plenty of bandwidth, I need to be sure that this is not the case, and that my account will not be deleted if it causes what you see as "too much" of a load on the server due to traffic... and that instead, I will recieve a warning that I am using too much (and perhaps a new plan recommendation), as opposed to having my site instantly deleted or suspended.

I'm all about getting what I pay for, and I think if I buy 35 GB of data transfer, I should get 35 GB of data transfer. I'm sure you agree with this, but I have to be sure. I've heard some pretty bad horror stories (not from this host specifically, or anything like that), and I really need to be sure that this does not happen.

Welcome to the forums, Minkoff! :D

Server resources include CPU load, RAM, bandwidth, disk space, etc. The different types of server resources often don't have a direct correlation with each other - an account can cause excessive CPU load while using relatively normal amounts of bandwidth.

On a shared hosting server, one user who is consuming excessive CPU resources will negatively impact all of the other users on the server. TCH has little choice but to immediately suspend an account that is using excessive CPU resources, so all of the other users on the same server do not suffer a loss in performance on their sites.

If you purchase a plan with 35GB of bandwidth per month, you will get 35GB of bandwidth per month. But this is not a license or permission to generate excessive CPU loads on the server.

Hello, As TCH-David pointed out, Our policy is to protect the entire server community. lets say you site was on a server and another user was abusing the resources to the point that your members were unable to connect to your site. What should TCH do???

I can tell you what happens in this case is we act immediatley and suspend the site , sending a notice to the user immdediatly upon suspension.

This is the best policy to protect the resources for all in a shared environment.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys. :)

I now have a better understanding of why your policy on excessive resource usage is the way it is... and I suppose any good host would work the same way... but is there a way to checp how much CPU I'm using on TCH, and what are the obvious causes?
