hrmm.. the way i know how to do it is to open up a command prompt, and type the command "ipconfig /all" just to check your current settings... then to change, "ipconfig / release" to release your current IP address, then type "ipconfig /renew" to renew your IP address.. i hope that helps.

Hi,

Do you mean the IP address of your computer? That depends on how your ISP allocates them.

Or do you mean the IP address of your hosted account ?

Then it depends if you are on a network, or direct connection to the internet.

Let us know how you get on with Patricia's suggestion. If that doesn't work - let us know if your ISP provides you with a dedicated IP, and if you go through a router to your PC.

Since you have a cable modem, Patricia's solution should work. If it does not, try turning the computer off, turn the modem off, wait about 1 minute, then turn everything back on. That would also request a new IP address.

The will usually works, but it depends on the length of the lease that your ISP uses. I had to this problem the other day and found out my lease time is 24 hours. This lease will be tied to your MAC address so turning off your modem for a minute will not work. I'm lucky enough to have a router that allows you to change the MAC address. Most likely you will have need to make sure your modem is off when your current lease expires.

I too have a cable modem, with dynamic IP. I have a Linksys router, and all the machines behind it have static IP's. I use no-ip's dynamic update client to keep the DNS info updated for my network. I guess that's off-topic huh?

Yep, Windows uses ipconfig. Linux/UNIX uses ifconfig. I've become somewhat of a guru setting up a network by using these commands.

i agree...my cable modem was the same way when I was using it. Now I've got a static dsl connection, so I don't have to worry as much about that. Worrying about hackers, etc, is another topic!

I remember having the same ip address for 5 years. i could tell someone it by heart. but i'm glad my ISP provider decided to go dynamic. and i try to change it once in a while just to keep things fresh :thumbup1:
