I am looking for a FREE hit stat counter to put on my website. The ones that I have tried like sitemeter, goodcounter, etc have timed out or so slow they don't work. I need your help to find a new counter. Thanks!

You should have one in your cPanel as a CGI script. That said, are you sure you want to do it? In my opinion they just dont look that great and you can get all of the information you need in your awstats instead.

I use the free services of both Extreme Tracker and Sitemeter.

They provide slightly different stats which suit different needs. Sitemeter does hangup/timeout sometimes. Extreme Tracker very rarely does. One thing of note to the free version of Extreme Tracker is that the stats are publicly available unlike Sitemeter which is password protected even in the free version. But if that isn't a factor, then I would recommend it. I have tried a half dozen of the major trackers and finally decided on these two.

I view Awstats almost daily, but these two trackers still conveniently provide me with data that I find useful.

In doing a little research on this question, I came across the following site. You can see if it meets your needs:

h*tp://hitslog.com

I found it on a list of counters on the following site:

h*tp://www.cryer.co.uk/resources/websitecounters.htm

Maybe something on one of these pages will be useful to you.

It may be worth it to try over at hotscripts.com If you use your own in, say, PHP then you can be sure it's fast and there are probably some that don't require ads.

I use Statcounter as with most of the "free" counters/stats sites it limits the amount of data but they've got nice features.

I've also got a Sitemeter counter but haven't noticed any problems with it.

Matter of fact I'm considering removing both from my page - unless you really need to keep track of visitors it tends to get away with you (the obsession with how many, who etc) - JMHO.
