cajunman4life Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Hi, I noticed while looking at the dedicated servers that the "lowest" has only 95GB data transfer/month, whereas the upper two have 1,000GB... is that a mistake? If not, why the *landslide* difference? Pushin for the "upper end models?" While I'm looking at a reseller account, down the road I may find a dedicated server fits my needs better. I am examining colocation as well, as I have a few servers in my home but only keep 3 of the 4 running all the time (the other is WAY too loud). I'm also looking at expanding my server collection. Any answers are of course greatly appreciated. Thanks guys! Aaron Graves Quote
TCH-RobertM Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Hello Cajunman, Hi, I noticed while looking at the dedicated servers that the "lowest" has only 95GB data transfer/month, whereas the upper two have 1,000GB... is that a mistake? If not, why the *landslide* difference? Pushin for the "upper end models?" The Main Difference is because one is SEMI-Dedicated and the others are Fully Dedicated systems. So on the Semi-Dedicated server you will have less bandwidth. Also Having 4 servers running in your Home..... Hopefully up north in the winter because the heat that they produce must make it quite cozy Quote

I'm blind in one eye and can't see out of the other. As for the 4 servers, only one gets hot (Compaq 6400R quad Xeon). The others run actually very cool, and the temperature in my room generally ranges from 70 to 75 (degrees F). It is a welcome addition in the winter. We'll see how it does in the summer, I just got these servers over the winter. The noise is the biggest issue, because I currently have them in my bedroom (I'm not single, but we don't live together... this will change once we do live together, or so I'm told). As usual, thanks for the fast response. Your support never ceases to amaze me. Quote

Hopefully up north in the winter because the heat that they produce must make it quite cozy <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Heh... I used to have 6 running in my apartment before I started getting dedicated servers (so much quieter now, and so much more bandwidth to my servers.) The dedicateds are good deals though. 100 Mbps each in a secure datacenter sure beats half a dozen in a non-controlled environment sharing a DSL line (in my case). Quote

You know, I work at a datacenter... I wonder if I could get like an "employee discount"... Quote
cajunman4life Posted May 4, 2005 Author Posted May 4, 2005 Speaking of dedicated servers, what exactly constitutes as "managed?" Say if I get a dedicated, unmanaged server, does that mean I'm responsible for all that goes on on that server (ie a service going down, needing to be restarted, or upgrading the "packages" on it after a security alert)? Thanks for any direction you can provide on this matter. Just out of curiousity, do you have any dedicated servers available? Quote
Head Guru Posted May 4, 2005 Posted May 4, 2005 Unmanaged means we will take care of reboots for you and deal with bad hardware. All software on the box falls into your lap. Managed - we take care of every aspect. From monitoring to all software. Including restarts of failed services. We are currently 2-5 days out on new server builds. Bill Quote
