MikkiV Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 Hello all. I've narrowed down my hosting choices to 3 possibilities. I'd be grateful if you could answer a few questions I have so I can hopefully narrow my choices down to TCH! 1. If I'm paying monthly, can I upgrade if necessary? Is there an upgrade fee or would I just pay the new service rate? 2. What happens if I go over monthly bandwidth limit? Do visitors just get an error message, is my site deleted (happened once to a friend of mine, on a different hosting service!), do you charge my credit card a huge fee? 3. A previous hosting provider I used overloaded their servers quite badly. Any mildly complicated PHP/MySQL would make my site run unacceptably slow. What is TCHs view on this? 4. The domain I wish to host is currently parked with another company that provides an email forwarding ability. How can I ensure a smooth migration (i.e., no lost emails). Thanks, MikkiV. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 Welcome to the forums MikkiV 1. If I'm paying monthly, can I upgrade if necessary? Is there an upgrade fee or would I just pay the new service rate? You can upgrade at any time and there is no upgrade fee. 2. What happens if I go over monthly bandwidth limit? Do visitors just get an error message, is my site deleted (happened once to a friend of mine, on a different hosting service!), do you charge my credit card a huge fee?Your account will be suspended. But you will receive an email when your bandwidth hits 80% so that you can take action to be sure it is not suspended by upgrading to a larger account or buying more bandwidth. 3. A previous hosting provider I used overloaded their servers quite badly. Any mildly complicated PHP/MySQL would make my site run unacceptably slow. What is TCHs view on this? TCH does not oversell it's servers and resellers are not able to oversell their accounts either. TCH takes this very serisously. 4. The domain I wish to host is currently parked with another company that provides an email forwarding ability. How can I ensure a smooth migration (i.e., no lost emails). You should not lose any email as long as you can check both places after propogation. You will have to access your old email by using the IP number once you switch the domain name over to TCH for a few days. Hope that helps. Quote
stevevan Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 Welcome to the forums! I hope Bruce was able to answer your questions in favor of TCH! I've been here 2 years and haven't had a problem yet (other than the rare mechanical problem which will happen with ANY host). You can't beat the prices and the helpful family members found here in the forums. If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask! Quote

Head Guru Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 MikkiV Good luck in your search for a new hosting provider. Bill Quote
TCH-Don Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 Welcome to the forum MikkiV What I did when I came here was to forward all my e-mail from my old host to my ISP e-mail. That way I still received any e-mail that went there during propagation. If you have any more questions, please ask Quote
j2k4b Posted April 27, 2005 Posted April 27, 2005 Welcome to the forums MikkiV! This is my third time with TCH. If that tells you something! Quote
MikkiV Posted April 28, 2005 Author Posted April 28, 2005 I now have a TCH hosting account! The friendly response swung my decision, combined with the fact that one of the ISPs still hasn't responded to me.. not a good sign! On another note, I can access a test page from your servers faster than I could from my previous ISP, so combined with the friendly response here on the forums, initial impressions are excellent! Oh, and the ISP with the slow servers - they're less than a 20 minute drive away from my house here in the UK! Quote
j2k4b Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Welcome to the TCH family of sites! We wish the best for you. Thanks! Quote
stevevan Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Well, welcome to the family! Be sure you stop by the Introductions section and "formally" say hi! Quote
Madmanmcp Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Hi MikkiV, welcome to TCH. Please don't take this the wrong way, I just want to explain some of the terms we use so there will be no confusion when trying to answer question. I can access a test page from your servers faster than I could from my previous ISP ISP = Internet Service Provider or a company that provides you a connection to the Internet. An ISP is a company like AOL or Netzero, or SBC or a cable or DSL company. They provide a way to connect to the internet to see web pages or get email or upload files to your web site. TCH does not provide you with a connection, they supply you with web space and a place to store your files for your web site and services for it. They are a Web Hosting company, not an ISP. The reason why you can access your pages faster is because of the data centers where TCH keeps their servers and the equipment they use to supply bandwidth. The other hosting site you used probably didn't have their server at these high quality/high speed data centers that TCH uses. Again, welcome and I only mean to help here. Quote
MikkiV Posted April 28, 2005 Author Posted April 28, 2005 Oh yes, whoops, didn't mean ISP, meant hosting provider! Hadn't quite woken up when I wrote that methinks. Quote
