I have Automatic Update enabled to download but not install updates, so I can review what's get installed on my machine *before* there's a problem.

Back when I upgraded to SP2, I had to fix a few things that the installer didn't like, and even after that, ended up having to download the entire SP2 patch and manually installing it myself.

Even if I had put off upgrading to SP2, what MS is doing here would not have affected me, so I don't see myself getting all that upset about it.

Sooner or later, I imagine that not upgrading to SP2 is going to have a cost - I expect security patches from MS at some point are going to require SP2 in order to install them.

I installed XP SP2 on my pc, and a family member, both went fine, I dont know why or if other peoples computers can't take it?

The first thing I did though, was disable the Windows firewall which enabled itsself, because, like we all do (i hope ;) ), I had a decent firewall already installed. These new security settings might break things, just take them out of super paranoid mode (the pop up stopper for me was on highest setting, it blocked ALL new windows, wether asked for or not).

For more info on decent firewall and decent anti virus, and they are exactly that, they are not firewalls with ad blocking, or anti virus with javascript blocking, they do what they say, efficiently, with little resource usage, read here:

Most of the problems that I have seen with regard to upgrading to service pack 2 involve systems that are infested with either Spyware and/or Viruses.

So far <almost> every computer that has been brought in to me with a botched upgrade has exhibited some form of malware infestation. This is not to say however, that other innocent programs cannot cause the upgrade to fail... They definately can!

Also, I have found the full SP2 Update downloaded directly from Microsoft (NOT WINDOWS UPDATE) has a much higher success rate.

Guess you just have to jump in there and start posting like a mad man so that your number of posts goes into the double digits at least.

We just like to make everyone feel welcome! By the way, if no one has told you lately, welcome to the forums! :D

and to add to this, if you do the process known as "slipstreaming" you'll get an even cleaner XP. google "slipstream xp" or go here
