Installing Movable Type

Okay, I went to the Help area, and looked up how to install Movable Type. I did steps 1-9 with no problem whatsoever.

 

And then I got to step 10--and feel like I stepped into another dimension.

 

10 . Edit the mt.cfg and mt-db-pass.cgi as required

 

I went to: http://www.beth.ws/MT/docs/mtinstall.html

and started reading the Configuration section.

 

Steps 1 & 2 were easy: open file and set the directory location of where you put MT.

 

Step 3 was a bit harder, but searching the forum gave me the answer, I think:

>ObjectDriver DBI::mysql
Database cpanelname_mtdb
DBUser cpanelname_username

 

Step 4 , 5, and 6: I don't think they apply. Or if they do, I don't know what should be here: DataSource /FULL/PATH/TO/DB

 

Step 7: Save and exit mt.cfg. Okay, I did that.

 

Step 8: Set your SQL database password. It says to: "Open mt-db-pass.cgi in a text editor." If that file exists, I don't know where it is.

 

And if I'm supposed to create additional directories for files, I don't know what they'd be or why.

 

Help? Someone, please? I don't even know *what to ask*.

The mt-db-pass.cgi file should be in your /MT directory. You can edit it in the File Manager of cPanel and put your password for the MySQL database there.

 

You are correct that the DataSource settings do not apply to your set up if you are using MySQL.

 

If you want to set up your weblog in a separate directory than your main one (i.e. you want to have a directory /weblog for your weblog) then create it.

But there isn't such a file. (honest) Why wouldn't there be, then? How would I know if there are other files I ought to have and don't?

 

He adds:

If the only purpose of this domain is the weblog, am I correct that I don't need to set up a directory for it?

 

Totally confused--I thought this would be *easy*

I guess it is best you download MovableType again and you will have this file in the main directory when you unzip.

 

Or you can sipmly create it by yourself because it is an empty file - the only data inside is your password which you have to type in. And there is nothing else.
