OldTimer Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 Beware RCMP BulletinKeep alert for people with cell phones in hand standing near you in the checkout line at retail stores, restaurants, grocery stores, etc., With the new camera cell phones, they can take a picture of your credit card, which gives them your name, number, and expiration date. Identification theft is one of the fastest growing crimes today, and this is just another example of the means that are being used. So, be aware of your surroundings. Please forward to all your friends and family, acquaintances too. Quote

BUT, this line about forwarding is what is used by all "hoax's" to help it propogate around the world. see the following URL http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_c..._cell_phone.htm Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 Hey Bob, thanks for the urban legend link. Our TV news ran this story as fact and when they did I wondered to myself, have these people ever seen a picture taken by a cellphone? I have a camera phone. Worst case scenario you would have to be at least a foot from the credit card to get a clear enough image. If someone is that close to me taking a picture I think I'd know about it. Quote
Madmanmcp Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 Welcome Bruce, I have been using the UrbanLegends site for years. I had to debunk more hoax's and well intended friends and co-workers than I can count and pointing them to a site like this helps. The dead giveaway was the statement about "forward to all". Quote
OldTimer Posted February 3, 2005 Author Posted February 3, 2005 At the bottom of that article - you linked to Such caveats aside, the scenario remains theoretically possible and is certain to become more feasible over time as the quality of camera phones improves. Law enforcement officials are taking it seriously, so consumers are best advised to do the same. Just trying to be helpful Quote
TCH-Don Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 Yes the quality on my camera phone is worse then a web cam. I tried a to capture a document, and it was unreadable. They are a neat idea, but need lots of improvment. Quote
bellringr Posted February 3, 2005 Posted February 3, 2005 I usually use snopes.com to see if something is true or not. I can't tell you how many times I've had those stupid pictures of sea creatures sent to me that they said were found after the tsunamis. > If they would just take two minutes to look things up before passing on garbage, I'd have alot less spam coming in from my relatives!
