I'm new to owning my own domain... so I really have no clue what everything is about. I mean I've been working on websites for quite some time now.. but just recently I was hosted.. and than not long later I ended up receiving a domain.. I was wondering what does... ' DNS propagation ' mean.. like what does that mean?

Hi wrongblonde.

Let me see if I can explain DNS.

The acronym stands for Domain Name Server. When someone types in a domain name into their browser, say www.******, that name has to be translated into the Internet address, in the form of a number, of the machine that hosts the site itself. The database that has the information to do the name-to-number conversion is distributed among a bunch of computers all over the world.

When you get the name, the registrar has to publish the information about the name and what machine number it belongs to, and the information has to make its way to all those computers. The process is known as DNS propagation. Because the computers that keep the information are spread out all over, that process can take some time.

Hope that helps.

Oh okay, thanks a lot Jim! That helps a lot..

I have one more question though.. well actually two...

1) How long does it usually take for the process to be completed?

and

2) How would I know when it is completed?

sorry for being a bug and so naive! Thanks so much for the help!!

Propagation can take up to 72 hours in most cases. I know because I can see the new site but if they are the same you might want to make a tiny change on the new site here so you can tell the difference.
