TwelveMotion Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 I am trying to put a forum up on my site, but the forum asks me for a database name and I don't know what that is. Also it asks me all these questions about mySQL and stuff... I need some help on this. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 Twelve, You will need to create a database in you cPanel. After you create the database you will create a user and then assign that user to the database. Then you will have your information to fill in the forum config requirements. Quote
LisaJill Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 alternatively you can use the one-click install through cpanel which will do all of that for you. =) It may be an older version of the script though. Quote

TwelveMotion Posted September 9, 2004 Author Posted September 9, 2004 Could you please be a little more specific? The Cpanel has like a zillion different links! I clicked on MySQL and I couldn't understand anything... Quote
LisaJill Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 In my cpanel it's under "Addon Scripts"; That may be different for different themes t hough, so look for that or something similar. =) Then it'll say phpbb along with a list of other scripts to install. Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 I went to Addon Scripts and this is what I have: Addon Scripts "The following addon scripts are available to be installed: InvisionBoard InvisionBoard is a web bulletin board system. PHP-Nuke PHP-Nuke is an advanced content management system. osCommerce osCommerce is an easy to use and configure shopping cart system. phpBB phpBB is a web bulletin board system. AdvancedGuestBook Advanced Guestbook is a PHP-based guestbook script." However it is just plain text, I don't see how I can actually install them. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 For phpBBphpBB is a web bulletin board system. Click the top phpBB, the one by itself and tell me what happens. Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 Oh, looks like it is a link after all. Ok so now it wants me to give it the admin user and pass, I am pretty sure I have those. But when it askes install at this url there is a blank after www.virtualalex.com/ _____ what do I put there? Forums? phpBB 2.0.8a Setup phpBB is a web bulletin board system. New Installation Admin User: Admin Pass: Install at this url: http://virtualalex.com/ (You must install in a top level directory. Example: 'http://virtualalex.com/phpBB' is a valid place to install, but 'http://virtualalex.com/user/andy/phpBB' is not. TCH-Bruce Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Twelve, When it asks for a user name and password don't use your cpanel user name and password. Enter a username you want to use to administer the forum and a password for that user. You need to install the forum into a folder in your domain space. So if you want to install it into a folder called "forums" enter "forums" in the blank field. Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 OK it seems to be working. I have 2 questions though. Firstly, avatars don't seem to be working. I have the options set to 120x120 49kb avators. I have tried uploading one from my machine and it deasn't work, and I tried putting in a URL that also did not work. Secondly is there a way I can put a banner back to my main site on the forum index? I don't want people to be stranded once they click on the forum button. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 To upload avatars you need to set the avatar folders permissions to 777. You will have to edit the overall_header.tpl template to be able to add a link. Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 "To upload avatars you need to set the avatar folders permissions to 777." Where do I do that? Also where is the overall_header template found? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted September 10, 2004 Posted September 10, 2004 Go to the folder you installed the forum. You should have an images folder. In that folder there should be a folder called avatars. That is the folder that needs 777 permissions. Next there should be a templates folder at the same level as the images folder. In that folder are folders for what ever themes you have installed. In each of the theme folders is where the template files can be found. Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 Ok I think I may have messed something up... There is no forums folder in my site folder. Althought there is a forum folder on my desktop... I downloaded phpbb of the website, but it seems that tch installed it by themselves so I took the forums folder out of my site folder an the forum still works fine. Botton line is, there is www.virtualalex.com/forums is where my forum is now, the folder on my desktop is and always has been titled "forum" not "forums" so I don't think it's being used. How is this possible? Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 Unless we are talking about the remote section. In that case there is a forums folder and an avatar folder. How do I set the premission? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 You need to use an FTP client or the file manager to set permissions on files and folders. Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 I am using dreamweaver, I looked around a bit and I can't find premmissions anywhere Quote
borfast Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 I don't think Dreamweaver allows you to change file permissions via FTP. You'll have to use another FTP client for that. Try SmartFTP. Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 I have a mac, smart FTP is a PC program. I don't beleive dreamweaver doesn't have premissions. I will go ask the dreamweaver forums. Quote
LisaJill Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 Try Transmit on OSX. It's fantastic and I use it when I want to use a GUI. You can chmod via terminal ftp though. =) Quote
TCH-Dick Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 What version of DreamWeaver are you using? You used to be able to set permissions via the ftp log but that is no longer an option. You need to install the Set Permissions extension. Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 I would really like to thank all of you guys for being so helpful and being so quick about it. I can always count on an answer to my latest questions within a few hours. Thanks alot. Dick- I downloaded the extension (I am using DW MX 2004 7.0) and I am not sure where to put it, or how to install it. Could you help me out with that? And then after it's installed how do I set premissions? Quote
borfast Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 Twelve, sorry, I assumed you were a Windows user. Glad to know you're not part of The Legion (just kidding ) As for the DW extension, I don't know how it works on the Mac but the Windows version of Macromedia products has a little utility called Extension Manager, from which you can install, uninstall and mess around with all the extensions you have installed for their products. Also, if I recall correctly, you can double-click an extension file and it will automatically be installed. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 (edited) Just click/double click the file SetPermissions3.mxp this will open your Extensions Manager and just accept. The extension will install, and notify you of a successful install. Select OK and then you will the see the following: This extension for Dreamweaver MX 2004, version 7.0.1, allows users to set remote file permissions via FTP. To use this extension, select the file(s) in the remote file list on which you wish to set permissions, then choose the "Set Permissions..." menu item from the context menu. Not all FTP servers support this functionality. Access: From the Site context menu. Edited September 11, 2004 by TCH-Dick Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 What context menu? Anyone know where it is? Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 Nevermind I found it, but it told me setting premissions is only allowed in version 7.1 :'( does the site have a free update or something? Quote

TCH-Dick Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 There is also Set Permissions V1.0.0 for Dreamweaver 3 - 6.1 Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 11, 2004 Author Posted September 11, 2004 Alright thanks alot, it seems that everythins is working fine. One last thing. In the forum configuration I set the clock to be GMT-5 but it wont work and it keeps showing the GMT time. No matter how I change it the time always remains the same. How do I get this fixed? Quote
borfast Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 If you're using the cPanel version, it may be a bug due to that version being outdated. If so, you could try upgrading to the latest version and see if it fixes the problem. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 Take a look at this discussion http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t...imezone&start=0 Quote
TwelveMotion Posted September 12, 2004 Author Posted September 12, 2004 Ok everything is going smoothly but now I have a bunch of guests posting messages. I don't want guests, I want people to have to register to post. How do I do that? Quote
TCH-Don Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 In your admin > Forum Permissions Control > select a forum change permissions of each forum to suite. i.e. POST and REPLY set to REG (registered) There is a lot of control in the admin panel if you look around, you will be surprised Quote
