marroug Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 A little noob questions... My current host account (from another hosting company) is about to expire and I would like to transfer to TCH. However, the domain registration still has 100+ days until it expires. 1. After ordering a hosting package, how do I redirect traffic to your servers keeping my currently registered domain? 2. When my domain registration is about to expire, will TCH re-register it for me and bill me? Thanks for the help... Marroug Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 Hello Marroug, 1. After you purchase your hosting package you can move your site to the TCH servers and change the name servers at your registrar to point here instead of where it is currently being hosted. 2. You can transfer the domain name to TCH and renew it here. It is a separate process and account from the hosting. Or you can renew your domain name where it currently is. Your choice. Quote
marroug Posted August 10, 2004 Author Posted August 10, 2004 Bruce, Thanks for the quick response. I just purchased the hosting package and will start transfering shortly. Thanks for offering service at a good price. I hope to soon experience the excellent service your customers talk about... Marroug Rock Sign Quote
danceswithscissors Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 I believe you're in for a pleasant surprise Marroug. I've been with many different webhosts over the years and TCH is the only place that ever cared about ME and my domains. They treat me like a real person, not just an account number. There's always someone to help me and answer questions. Rock Sign Quote
TCH-Rob Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 When my domain registration is about to expire, will TCH re-register it for me and bill me? Please keep in mind that you will want to transfer your domain while you have at least 30 days left to make sure it gets completed even if an error may arise. I would even do it as soon as you feel comfortable as you dont lose any time on the registration. Say you move it now then it would expire in a year and 100 days so dont think you have to wait till the end. Make sure you're satisfied here first though. Although I dont listen to Jana often as her meds wear off frequently I can sai I agree with this statement. I believe my second or so post I was asking if I could renew my hosting for several years at a time. With that in mind let me welcome you home Marroug. Thumbs Up Quote
danceswithscissors Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 I don't need meds, I need more hours in the day to sit here and catch Rob sneaking up behind me. Marroug, we love to tease each other and have fun in here. You're not only getting a great webhost, you'll be making some wonderful friends. For Rob: MAJOR Raspberry! Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 11, 2004 Posted August 11, 2004 Welcome Marroug! Yes here you not only get a great host, but many helpful family members to make friends with and get help from Quote
skeptismo Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Hi to all, I've noticed that there is an offer in Domain Transfer, that is I can transfer my domain into TCH, still keep its current date of expiration + a full year ! Is this still valid ? Another general question about registars ? What do they really offer ? I mean what are the cons/pros of transferring from one registar to another ? (except from prices ..) Is it more convinient to have/host your web site in a company that is also your registar? Any ideas ? Thanks a lot Panayiotis Quote
TCH-Rob Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Is this still valid ?Yes it is. What do they really offer ? I mean what are the cons/pros of transferring from one registar to another ? This is subjective. I used to work for the registrar that I use and went with them not only for price but for the service I knew I would get if I had an issue. Kind of the same reason I host here. Is it more convinient to have/host your web site in a company that is also your registar? Not always and in some cases no. Many registrars offer hosting, though it is usually costly or you dont get much in the packages. They offer it but it isnt their primary business and many times I feel you pay for it because they arent concerned as much if there are problems with that part of the operation. Conversely, many hosting companies offer domain registration but are reselling from an accredited registrar. Becoming an accredited registrar is costly so it makes sense to resell, this is what we do. In my opinion, find a registrar that fits your budget and has an easy means of management. Of course we would love to have you come over here with registration as well but more importantly do what you feel comfortable with. Quote

What are other options for a registar ? I mean it has only your domain info (owner, admin etc info) , and NameServers info, right ? What may be a "problem" in a registar ? (To loose its DNS records due to DOS I suppose, anything else ?) Anyway the cost is very low nowdays (except for major registart which costs quite expensive and don't understand why) and I'm thinking to transfer one for all in TCH as to have the support I need (I'm very satisfied so far from TCH and thinking that the same quality support will be on Domain registration accounts too, even as a reseller ) Thanks anyway for your reply, Rock Sign Quote

I will take the thanks anyway to mean that my answer wasnt quite what you were looking for. For me it isnt just that they only have my domain information, though that is a big deal to me. A problem to me is how easy are they to contact? What if you forget your login information? Am I treated like a customer or am I in the way when I call? If I forget to pay when it comes time to renew, is it shut down right away or do I have a grace period? To me it is more than just where my domain sits between payments. I'm thinking to transfer one for all in TCH as to have the support I need I think so too and as I said, we would be happy to have you here on that front as well. Quote
skeptismo Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Thank you all guys ! (Bruce, Rob, Don, and any other I forgot .. !) Will go to transfer right away. One, (actually two) final (!!) questions. What is the best period for trasnferring registars and hosts ? Step 1- Transferring host : I mean I want to inform my customers that they maybe some downtime due to hosting reallocation etc..etc.. of my own domain. Is the best time during a weekend ? I mean to start the transfer Friday, do all the new setup etc.etc (maybe some will help with the cPanel copy as I saw you can offer some help onthat...) so Monday morning if all goes right, to be up and running ? 2. Transferring Registar info I'm thinking of transferring first my domain (step 1), update my dns servers to point to my TCH account, and then sometime to make the Registar Transfer (maybe after a week or two.). Is there any other "hint" from any of your Guru's ?? :-) Anyway, thanks again for the reply, you all people rock ! :-) Rock Sign Quote
purplespider Posted August 23, 2004 Posted August 23, 2004 Hey Skeptismo, If you first sign up with your new TCH hosting account, then upload your site to it, you can then just change the nameservers at your registrar to the TCH ones and your site will not experience any downtime atall. However, if you wish to change the registrar of your domain to TCH, there will unfortunatly be a couple of days downtime while this is carried out. If you're happy with your current registrar then I'd reccomend staying with them. Not that there is anything wrong with transfering your domain to TCH, its just whether its worth the down time. Hope that helps James Quote
