danceswithscissors Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 I am attempting to install Microsoft Messenger V6.2 over the top of V4.7. The install works fine and the program opens and runs fine immediately after installation. After I shut the program down, next time I open it, V4.7 comes up. So I started surfing my hard drive to find the exe file for V6.2, but I can't find it. I can only find one Messenger folder containing the initial install file for V6.2, and all the other files are for V4.7. I should probably just uninstall the whole thing and start from scratch, but having done that once before I encountered problems getting the newer version installed. Anybody have experience with this problem? Quote
LisaJill Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 I'm not really sure how to fix this as I run a Mac *winks* But I'm going to move this to the software forum so that you can get better help. =) Quote
danceswithscissors Posted July 28, 2004 Author Posted July 28, 2004 Thanks Lisa I'm about to send an email to Microsoft and tell them what I think of their software, then install Yahoo. I'm just not quite that desperate yet. LOL Quote
LisaJill Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 Mayhap you'd like to try gaim? gaim.sourceforge.net - it's an open source, multi client software. Updated lots. Then you can have both =) Quote
TCH-Rob Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 Or Trillian, they have a free version as well, checks all five major clients. Quote
danceswithscissors Posted July 28, 2004 Author Posted July 28, 2004 I got rid of MSN, reinstalled fresh. Installed Yahoo. Installed Gaim. Will have to go check out Trillian. Guess I can just chat with the world now. LOL Thanks for the help! Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 In v. 4, go to "Tools" > Alternatives > General then uncheck the two first options "Run messenger automatiically..." and "Open messengers main window..." Note: I dont know if these are the exact names of things in eng. version since Im running the swedish version. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted July 28, 2004 Posted July 28, 2004 (edited) You are talking about two different programs(not versions). MSN Messenger V6.2 and Windows Messenger V4.7. Windows Messenger is bundled in Windows. It is used by Windows to integrate things like Outlook, Outlook Express, and Remote Assistance. MSN Messenger has more features than Windows Messenger. Basically both do the same thing, but MSN Messenger allows more customization and Windows does not rely on it Edited July 29, 2004 by TCH-Dick Quote
danceswithscissors Posted July 28, 2004 Author Posted July 28, 2004 In that case I have more chat programs that I know what to do with. LOL Everything seemed to work ok tonight, and I got absolutely no work done at all. woooot Quote
