blix Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 I am unable to update my site by overwritng the files. I use captain FTP & I never had any problems before with my previous host, can someone tell me why I can't overwrite my files? It's a really painful experience having to delete & then re-upload each file that is uploaded. Quote

LisaJill Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Have you checked the permissions on those files? Or tried another ftp program? I've never even heard of captain ftp - not that Ii'm a library of ftp programs, but hey. =) Also, cross posting really isn't necessary, we read all of the posts and respond as possible, so I'm goign to merge your topics. blix Posted June 24, 2004 Author Posted June 24, 2004 Yeah sorry for the double post - sorry the actual name of the program is FTP Commander - do you know of a better one I can use or should this one do it for me? I can't seem to find any settings & how do I check permissions on files? Thanks for the help :-) Quote
LisaJill Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Not a worry, blix. Are you on a PC? Before I moved to Mac I was a big fan of SmartFTP which is free for personal and educational use. You can definitely check permissions in that and it has no problems overwriting files on TCH servers. =) You can find it at the SmartFTP website. There is also a discussion on the various ftp program favorites of our family in the software forum, somewhere, I believe. =) Quote

When I drag all the fies into "WWW" to replace the ones currently there smart FTP does it almost instantly (should take about 5 minutes) & it says that transfer complete! This is not good :-( Quote
blix Posted June 24, 2004 Author Posted June 24, 2004 Just looked at the log on smart FTP & it says "permission denied" Quote
LisaJill Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 blix - if you right click and then go to 'chmod' - don't change anything, but does it say something like 644/666/755/7777? or does it say '0'? Or z) none of the above? Quote
TCH-Dick Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 (edited) It might not make a difference, but try uploading to "public_html" not "www". Edited June 24, 2004 by TCH-Dick Quote

LisaJill Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 Right click on one of the files that you can't overwrite - any of them should do, or check a few, and see what it says for the permissions. 'www' and 'public_html' are symlinks - they go to the same place, so it shouldn't matter, really. Quote

TCH-Don Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 You sholud be able to replace those files. But consider changing into the public_html folder on your site first, and then highlight the files on your computer and select transfer or drag them and drop on top of the files on the site. Quote
blix Posted June 24, 2004 Author Posted June 24, 2004 Thanks guys? I think Don't know if you guys fixed something up your end but yeah both FTP's do it fine now - PRAISE JESUS! Thanks again Regards Fig Quote
TCH-Rick Posted June 25, 2004 Posted June 25, 2004 This is one of the reasons we reply to so many posts with "Please submit a ticket." There was a problem with the ftp server on server 74. When several tickets come in with a similar issue on the same server it is a big hint on where the problem might lie. I reinstalled the ftp server and it should be working fine now. Quote
