I have two sites (A - marymarcdante.com, B - mysmilediet.com) with two different hosts and a third domain - mymothermyfriend.com forwarded to site A home page. Site A is 50MB and has a shopping cart and 10 email addreses. Site B links to site A.

Questions:

Q1) Is it possible to avoid downtime and if not, how long would down time be?

Q2) What steps in what order do I take to create a seamless transfer of my sites to TCH?

Thanks for your help!

It is possible to move without any downtime or minimal downtime.

You will require at minimum 2 hosting plans. One for site A which you could park the mymothermyfriend.com over and another for site B. Or you could purchase a reseller plan and host all three separately.

Sign up and get your space, then transfer your content to the new sites. When everything is copied change the DNS servers to point to the TCH nameservers. Propogation takes between 1 to 3 days, email sometimes longer. But if you leave your existing sites active until propogation finalizes your visitors wouldn't even know you changed hosting companies.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for your quick response!

If I choose the resellers package, I assume my current main site marymarcdante.com would be the parent site. Will my #2 (mymothermyfriend.com - currently parked on mm home page) and #3 site (mysmilediet.com)still retain their original domain names or do they become "subdomains" such as mysmilediet.marymarcdante.com?

I want them to retain their original names.

I'm smiling!

Hello Gift!

Bruce is right-on about this. If your old host has CPanel and supports it, we can do a transfer using CPanel (With the help of techs). If they have CPanel but won't support a transfer, you can generate a full backup (Again, if supported) and upload it to your new account here, and get a tech to restore it to your account here. Otherwise, you'd have to download all of the files form your old host to your computer then upload them to your account here.

The only "downtime" will be DNS propagation time. While your propagation is occurring, I wouldn't suggest making many changes to your website.

I agree with Rob with one exception...

If you are going to leave files on the old host during propogation, in order to avoid downtime, then it is helpful to make a small, unimportant change to the homepage on one host or the other, just so that you know which site you are actually getting when you browse to it. It'll just help you know when it has fully propogated a little bit better.

Good luck with the move.
