Auder Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Somehow the background colors changed on my advanced guestbook and my admin username and password became unusable. It seems someone has gotten access and switched it the way they wanted it. ugh. I went to the mysql table and changed the authorized person and left the password blank which got me back in. I have changed the username and password but now I worry about securing it so this doesn't happen again. Any ideas on what might be happening and measures I should take? Thanks. Auder Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 (edited) First of all... Read this link and follow Mikej´s instructions (if that post applies to your problem) and then change pw inside admin in guestbook often. Edited June 13, 2004 by Jikrantz Quote
Auder Posted June 12, 2004 Author Posted June 12, 2004 Many thanks! Just what I needed. I don't understand how my searches on this forum on the word "guestbook" didn't seem to bring up that thread. Is there some trick to using the search here? Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Is there some trick to using the search here? That i wanna know too. In this case, i just remembered reading about it and thankfully i remembered where. Quote
Deverill Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 Is there some trick to using the search here? If I can't find something here that I'm looking for I go to Google and enter "search term site:totalchoicehosting.com" and it sometimes finds more goodies on my topic. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 (edited) Just a question/idea, cant you guys implement google in to forum some way for us? (Begging/questioning/flirting smiley) Edited June 12, 2004 by Jikrantz Quote
boxturt Posted June 12, 2004 Posted June 12, 2004 You will often need to set the time span on the search page. It's under 'Search Options'. the search function defaults to 30 days or newer. Quote
MikeJ Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 2) Change pw inside admin in guestbook often. Just FYI, if you're running version 2.2 of the advanced guestbook, changing your admin password won't do a thing. The reason it's so easily hacked is because they don't need your password. The only way to correct that is to upgrade or remove version 2.2. Quote

But, otherwise, changing pw often will do no harm atleast? Quote
MikeJ Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 Yea, Thomas. Just the way you wrote your post could make it sound like changing your password frequently on a vulnerable advanced guestbook would get around the problem (which it won't). I didn't want to give anyone a false sense of security. But in general, yes, changing your password every so often is indeed a good idea. Thumbs Up Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted June 13, 2004 Posted June 13, 2004 (edited) Ah ok, sorry. But that is why i wrote the link to your advisory first, but i will edit my original post. EDIT: Better (see my original post)? Edited June 13, 2004 by Jikrantz Quote
