Even if I do hotlink protection, which I'll turn on in a moment, what's to stop somebody from downloading the image to their machine/server and using it anyway? dean
-
Okay. I've realized that this WAS entirely my own fault, as my slideshow (of three whopping images) was repeated from this IP ad nauseum. I have since modified the javascript code for the slideshow to allow for a new variable for maxloops. This way, I can have visitors only loop through the slides 10 or 15 times before the show stops. I'm not really worried about this person. Now I think it was someone without bad intentions. It sounds like I might want to turn on Hotlinking anyway, although I hesitate to stop people from doing something that they are not doing yet. Perhaps after I get the gallery uploaded... Thanks for all your help!!!! dean

Apparently some HTML coders get caught in infinite loops too... I have a slideshow on my index page that keeps on rotating through over and over and over and over and over and over... you get the picture... over and over again. Seems like this person just had my page up and either left their computer on or perhaps had a *crash that left a connection open to that page. At any rate, it's my own fault for not having a max number of loops for the slideshow... I shoulda checked the logs earlier... I'm just glad i didn't take any action against them. dean

thanks for the tip... I'll wait to see if I get more TCH feedback on this. I would call Cox, but I'm in Costa Rica and the phone charges here are ridiculous. thanks for the kudos... Actually the first thruster surfboard I owned was a garduque, and that alone intrigued me enough to check your site.... funny blog. (paraphrase) "teurettesguy grounds his son for not agreeing that the garbage disposal sounds like a wookie taking a sh^%." LOL. haven't had a good snickerlaugh in a while... d

That's the weird thing. I only have 2 MB of images. did they download all of my images 800 times? why might someone do that? could they be infected by some worm/virus/troj/etc? d

Ummmm. huh? I just checked Cpanel and no I don't. But. I don't understand how they could, for only 2 days, constantly beat my site's jpgs to transfer death and then stop. Wouldn't the specific IP continue to pull my bandwidth over a longer period of time? Before I gung-ho the hotlinking... Are there disadvantages to turning on hotlinking? It reads that it stops people from showing my pics from another site. Is there any way I can find out what site? Of course ip24-251-175-189.ph.ph.cox.net doesn't exist anymore.. dean

Hi Rob, thanks for the info. I just looked at the site, and it does show explicitly how to add the javascript code to the home page. But... does Java = Javascript in this case? I ask because my menus are DHTML/javascript. I know the globalish stats are about 90% of people have it running, but I want to make sure I'm not chasing off customers by having an unusable menu.

In my Awstats, i found a particular host, ip24-251-175-189.ph.ph.cox.net who has sucked down 1.22 Gb of data in two days, Feb 22,23. It was almost all images, as I have 1.5 Gb of jpgs of bandwidth used of 1.55 total gb for the month. I only have less than 2MB of images on my site. What was this person doing? How can I stop this from happening in the future because it 1. screws up my stats 2. might push me over my bandwidth usage limit I imagine it's hopeless to try to contact this person, but how might I try? TIA dean

Thanks for the reply, sorry, things move slowly in the tropics. I checked the link, and have seen that while googling, but it does not mention the specific feature, i.e. javascript enabled, that i want to track. How can i be sure that it will track this? Or should I just take it for a given? Is this file installed on our virtual servers by default or do i have to download it? thanks, dean

I was trying to get to cpanel to check awstats to check about "javascript enabled browsers". I need a percentage or something because I want to use a javascript slideshow, and don't want to deter visitors with a blank text only first page.... the last time i checked under the Miscellaneous heading near the bottom, the only active statistic is favorites added. The next stat, Javascript disabled says "-" Does that mean that no one has javascript disabled? If not, that is if this stat is not enabled, is there a way to enable this checking? I have poked around the awstats.mydomain.conf file, and did not see a parameter for javascript. I believe it would fall under the MiscTrackerUrl heading, but I don't see that. Maybe I need to increase the LevelForBrowsersDetection to 2 from 1? of course, if it is working, i don't want to change a thing.... TIA, dean

I can't access it either. dean

It looks like you need a reference to the page you want, i.e. <a href="page2.html#summary">click and now you'll go to page 2</a> you might want an absolute path as well, i.e. www.CWyourwebsite.com/page2.html#summary hope this helps, dean

Awstats Update Question & Outgoing Email Problems?
surfdean replied to ItsJustMe's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
My awstats is also not updated. I just submitted a ticket, but what happened? I downloaded the raw access logs to look at instead but it's so much prettier with aw -
I too use FF as my main browser, but keep IE for those *special* pages that *only* like IE. I developed my site mainly by looking at FF, and IE more as an afterthought, and they render *almost the same... it seems that with absolute text and image placement defs, they are about 10-20px off... Bruce- Why would you use IE specifically for this forum?

Hello all, I too have a "tempermental" laptop. Every 1/2 hour to 2-3 hours of use it freezes. I am forced to power down with the button (keyboard doesn't work) and upon reboot, it can't find the hard drive. Luckily, there is a removable type drive interface, and the *only* way I can get it to boot again is to pull the drive and re-seat it. I think it's a dell clone, but there are no identifying stickers left (it's a Pentium 233). Aside from old age, i have the feeling it is a bios issue. I have a 20gig drive but the bios says it's 8gig... really can't wait to get a new machine, but am stuck with this for another few weeks at least. On the bright side, I have a newfound appreciation for the save button dean

Hi there. Great, active, informative forum here. I am researching a host for a non-computer person. He wants to have the payments automatically deducted from a credit card when they are due so that he doesn't have to fill in a form, etc. I will be doing it initially, so no problem there, but I will be moving on, and he wants the site to continue running without having to worry about domain or hosting billing issues. Is this possible? I have already sent an email via the form on the "secureserver.net" domain registration site from the support link at the bottom, but I thought I'd throw the Idea around here since you all are so smart TIA, dean BTW what is this?
