Here's a question to those familiar with the AVI format....

I have downloaded some Video Photoshop tutorials from surreal-utopia.com. They are around 18-30MB's each and in AVI video format.

The site said to make sure you have the latest DivX codec, so I downloaded the DivX player and the codec bundle. I also downloaded the latest version of RealPlayer and the latest Direct X.

I can't seem to get the AVI files to play. They freeze my system and don't play at all. I went to to the DivX player and tried to open the file... absolutely nothing happens... same goes for RealPlayer.

I am running Win 98SE, 550mHz, PIII, ATI Radeon 7500 GFX card.

Anyone know what the issue could be?

I checked the system requirements for DivX and Real and I meet them, tho just barely.

If someone knows of a better player or some way to find out why the files don't run, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks,

Nat

For some reason I can't get Windows Media Player to play anything on this system. I even got the latest version. Everything just hangs for some reason.

It says "connecting" and then nothing happens.

Are the latest DivX codecs available for WMP? If so, how do I get them?

I don't know why I can't play this thing!

Don- if I PMed you the link to the file, do you think you could try opening it and see what happens on your end?

Have you set up Windows Media Player, Tools Options, Format, check the video file box, that will tell the media player to play .avi files.

There is also a set up in real player.

Richard,

I went to Tools -> Options -> File Types... and .avi is selected.

It just hangs.

In fact, it even hangs when I try to play Windows Media music files from the web. It's strange.

I see you have problems with avi files. So do i often (ok, very often).

Im no guru in file formats but avi files are usually divx stuff these days.

If you go here you can hopefully find a solution. It has helped me many times.

You could also download and install G-spot. This program will tell you 1) what codec is needed and 2) which program that can play it (if the codec is installed).

I did find Gspot and run it. It said I had the correct Codecs... but still the AVI file won't play.

I even downloaded the DivX Free player and that hangs as well.

Could it be my system?

I'm baffled!

Here's a strange thing... I just tried to play audio from Windows Media Player... one link was on my hard drive and one was online... got this error:

"Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is the file does not exist at the specified location or the computer where the file is located is offline."

Why would I get that error for two files that are not offline or where the path is correct?

Also wanted to mention... I have several audio/video players installed on my system. Perhaps one or more of them are at odds with one another? Just a thought.. don't know if there is any merit to such a thought... but wanted to point that out in case there is some conflict.

These are the players (all are the free versions):

RealPlayer Version 10.0. Build 6.0.12.857 Helix Powered Distribution RN30BB

Windows Media Player Version 9.00.00.2980

Muiscmatch Jukebox Version 8.20.0107

DivX Version 2.5.3

Winamp Version 5.03

Well.. I posted this in another forum I frequent and someone said:

The reason the tutorials wont play is because of your system. The tutorials have a resolution of 1280 x 1024. Thats too much for your 550Mhz CPU to handle.

What a bummer :P

I am very unsusre about what i am about to say (so wait to a better tech person answers) but doesnt resolution (1280 x 1024) have more with what the graphics card can handle than cpu?

Posted

Your video card supports DFP maximum resolution Up to 1600x1200. Try setting your current resolution to 1280x1024 and retrying the avi. Will your monitor support that resolution?

And from what I know the video card and monitor is what determines what resolution you can achieve, not the CPU.

Forgot to mention this yesterday, which was good since you mention this

one link was on my hard drive and one was online... got this error

Do you mean that the path to the online one on your hd is

c:\bla blah or http://...

If http://

I have that problem with streaming audio and video too often, and in that case Gspot can not help you. :P

Have you tried to play those tutorials in winamp?

I tried Lightning.avi and it works here.

Try to play these files in winamp, the very first thing you do after a reboot too see if it still freezes/hangs.

I had these freezing problems in Win ME before no matter how small/big filesize, when i rebooted and tried it as the very first thing, it worked.

How much RAM do you have?
