!!blue Posted March 20, 2004 Posted March 20, 2004 Ok, whenever I start up my computer [Win 2000 Prof Ed] at home and log-in, after a bit I get an error window that says: (X) Error: Execution of specified command failed. [ OK ] or something to that effect. It's very annoying and I can't remember what I did before this started happening (and I'm finally getting around to doing something about it). I opened up the task manager while the error was still there and found out the process running is vbsystem35.exe. It's under my c:\Winnt\system32\ folder so I don't want to just delete it. What is it? Can I delete it? Can I un-install it? What gives??? Heeellppp! ! ! thanks, !!blue Quote
!!blue Posted March 21, 2004 Author Posted March 21, 2004 I guess no one has an answer Oh well... Quote

Heeellppp! ! ! thanks, !!blue A Google search shows no mention of a Windows file by that name, only a few newsgroup posts that discuss a problem similar to yours. I don't think it's a problem with Windows; you may have downloaded some type of malware or virus. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted March 21, 2004 Posted March 21, 2004 Now don't be !!blue, I wasnt able to find a thing on this. Our nocternal friend with the artwork found more than I did. I do not have that file on my wifes Win2K box, I really doubt it is an essential file. What may have happened is that you deleted some junk and this was a dependancy that is left behind. If you have Adaware or the like I would run it to see what it comes up with. If you are comfortable with it you can look at your registry and see what is run at startup, remove the offending line and it will go away. Important, if you have never worked in your registry before, don't. Or at the very least back it up first. Removing the wrong key can cause all sorts of fun that will have that popup box pale in comparison. Quote
Deverill Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 Another thing you can try if you are adventurous is to open the file in a text editor, preferably one better than notepad but it will do, and see if there are any text strings in the middle of the programming gibberish that may give you a clue what it is. I searched for vbsystem* on my XP-Home system but no hits either. Quote
!!blue Posted March 22, 2004 Author Posted March 22, 2004 Ok, some very good suggestions! Thanks all! I do run Ad-aware and it catches mostly cookies and the like (I try to keep the machine clean). I also update the virus scanner about every two weeks or so and it hasn't caught anything in a while. I'll try to open the registry and see if I can pinpoint the file; if I don't see anything kooky then I'll remove the .exe from the file name-restart the machine-and if it doesn't crap out in a major way--then I'll delete it. thanks again, !!blue Quote
Madmanmcp Posted March 22, 2004 Posted March 22, 2004 I would suspect a virus/trojan/malware type program. With the "VB" in the beginning of the filename I would say its a Visual Basic program and the "system35" is very close to system32. This type of naming is used to make it appear that it is a valid Operating system file. My suggestion (what I usually do) is to rename the file and reboot. I will rename a file and put and underbar in the extention, vbsystem35.ex_. If you reboot and have problems you can always rename it back and reboot and be back where you started. If things go well and you determine the file is not needed you can come back and delete it later. This may not clear the error message. You will probably need to remove it from the registry or from startup. Quote
ThumpAZ Posted March 24, 2004 Posted March 24, 2004 !!blue, PM me and I can send you some programs to help navigate through the maze of junk that could be plaguing you if you like. Quote
!!blue Posted March 28, 2004 Author Posted March 28, 2004 At first I tried renaming the file and I got a warning saying that either "the disk is full, the file is write-protected or in use." So I restarted the computer in safe-mode and tried renaming the file again.... same warning message. So I restarted the computer again in normal-mode and waited for that original warning to happen then re-named the file at that point. Success! I restared the computer again and everything looks good What I'll do is leave the file there for a week or so and during normal use if anything looks odd I can go from there. thanks everyone! !!blue Quote
