ggscheidle Posted January 28, 2004 Posted January 28, 2004 Quick question. I know you have probably answered this question a million times but how about a million and 1 more time. I currently have dial up AOL as my ISP. I just purchased a web host plan from tch and was reading about how to set up email. The instructions say I need to know what my ISP's outgoing mail server is. The answer AOL gave me was "AOL email system is not compatible with POP3 or SMTP protocols for sending and receiving email. I just purchased a domain name and will need to set up 3 different email accounts at this new domain. Will I still be able to use your services without AOL's info? I really hope so as I am excited to be a new member and am anxious to get my website and email accounts up and running. Gina Quote
TCH-Rob Posted January 28, 2004 Posted January 28, 2004 I dont know if they still work but they used to for AOL SMTP za.mx.aol.com zb.mx.aol.com zc.mx.aol.com if not try mail.****** on port 26 Quote
ggscheidle Posted January 28, 2004 Author Posted January 28, 2004 Thanks for the fast reply Rob. I will certainly try this. I just signed up with tch this evening so I'm not even "authorized" yet. I will try this as soon as I can. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though - I would love for this to be a good experience as web/email troble is the last thing I need in addition to opening a new business. Thanks again PS - if any other AOL users are out there and are using dial up - please respond. Quote
ggscheidle Posted January 28, 2004 Author Posted January 28, 2004 Please forgive my ignorance in referring to Total Choice Hosting as tch instead of TCH. It's been a long day.... Quote
Madmanmcp Posted January 28, 2004 Posted January 28, 2004 I believe all you need is a connection to the internet...and thats what a dialup to AOL will give you. Just dialup and logon to AOL, minimize the AOL window and Startup your email program and set the incoming (POP3) and outgoing (SMTP) mail servers to mail.[yourdomain].com. This should be what you need. You will not be using AOL's mail servers since they are not POP3 compatible. Quote
ggscheidle Posted January 28, 2004 Author Posted January 28, 2004 Thanks for the info Bob. I finally got things set up so that I can receive emails to my new account without any problems. Now I just need to figure out how to send emails from new account. I keep getting errors. It's probably an AOL thing - One of them says "The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's email address. The sender's email address was 'XXX@xxx.com'. Subject ", Account: 'mail.xxx.com (1)', Server:'mail.xxx.com', Protocol:SMTP, Server Response: '452 4.4.5 Insufficient disk space;try again later', Port:25, Secure (SSL): No, Server Error:452, Error Number: 0x800CCC78" I did "try again later" like it said and then I got the following message: "Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Account: 'mail.xxx.com(1)', Server:'mail.xxx.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port 25, Secure (SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F" I am going to search around the forums to see if I can find anything pertaining to this...... TCH-Bruce Posted January 28, 2004 Posted January 28, 2004 In your email program under the account setup options try setting your outgoing SMTP server port to 26 instead of 25. You don't state which email client program you are using. Quote
ggscheidle Posted January 30, 2004 Author Posted January 30, 2004 Thanks Bruce - I believe everything is working correctly now. Thanks to all who gave me suggestions. Gina Quote

Ninepatch Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 Hi - I set up an e-mail account for one of the folks in my group who is on AOL. When I tried to walk her through /ourdomain.org/webmail access she got to the sign in dialog box, entered the correct info and aosmell Mad!!! just sat there looking stupid. In about 2 minutes TCH gave us the "Access Denied" screen. I was able to access the account fine, but I have an ISP that understands it lives in the real world and has to work and play well with others. Is there a solution to this? Thanks buddies! Beth Quote
Madmanmcp Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 Beth, I would guess that they are having problems because they have a router and/or firewall and the port is being blocked. If its a home Network you need to access the router/firewall and open port 2095. If its from a network at work they will need to talk with the admin to open the port. Quote
Ninepatch Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 Thanks Bob. Will give it a try. It's her home PC. Now, to convince her husband that this won't crash and burn his precious computer. Beth Quote
ggscheidle Posted February 3, 2004 Author Posted February 3, 2004 Hi There - I'm back again. I knew it was too good to be true... Anyways, I actually did get my email working through the AOL dial up connection. The problem is, I need to be very quick. What happens is I connect to AOL, I then open Outlook Express which connects and sends any messages in my outbox and then receives any new email and then my AOL connection is disonnected. This happens everytime. What I've learned that I have to do is prepare any emails I need to send ahead of time (before I dial up to AOL). That way, as soon as the AOL connection is made, I open Outlook Express and it gives me just enough to send those outgoing emails (I've only tried one at a time so far). I've also already changed the port to 26. Any suggestions? Maybe I would be better off trying to use Outlook instead.?? Gina Quote
Madmanmcp Posted February 3, 2004 Posted February 3, 2004 AHHHH!!!! In Outlook, click on TOOLS then on OPTIONS and click the CONNECTION tab. Now remove the checkmark next to "Hang up after sending and receiving". See if thats the problem Quote
ggscheidle Posted February 5, 2004 Author Posted February 5, 2004 Bob Thanks so much. Your suggestion did the trick. Who would have thought.... At any rate, I just want to take a minute to thank everyone who has helped me since I've come on board. TCH members are truly the best, along with the techs and the service I have gotten has been outstanding. Thanks Again Gina Quote
