transfering a message board

My current webhost has been down more than up lately and I am looking to leave them. If I move over here what is the process for moving my phpbb message board over here so I don't lose my users info and the forum configuration and all?

First thing that needs to be determined is which message board are you using on your old site? is it one that you installed, or one that came with your web provider.

If it was provided by your web provider and does not match what is offered at tCH, then we have to investigate further.

However, if it's one that you installed yourself, then it's a matter of using FTP to download your entire forum subdirectory from your old site to your PC, and then turn around and use FTP to upload the entire subdirectory from your PC to the appropriate place on your TCH web site.

It may also be important to make sure with your FTP utility that you download all appropriate hidden files.

You may also want to contact the developer of your discussion board software to see if they have a recommended method for transfering the board from one web site ot another.

If your previous host uses cPanel then the transition is REALLY easy.

Use the cpanel to backup your site and your mysql db's.

Then when you come here, just restore from the backup.

they do use cpanel, the message board is phpbb 2.0.2. I guess it will work then. Thank you. Guess I am switching over. :)

I had problems transfering my board over. I had switched to a different theme and in the switch couldn't see anything until I changed my theme preference to the default in phpMyAdmin. Just to be safe I would switch to the default theme settings in the old board then reinstall any new themes after everything is running correctly. That was with InVision Board so it may not apply to phpbb. Good luck in the move.

KW,

Yeah sometimes I surprise myself. :P The cPanel Backup function is great. Let's you save your whole site into a little zipped up pkg. Save it locally to your hd or on your space somewhere. Check it out!

Rick,

Good point! Might be a good idea even on phpBB or any other built-in to revert to the defaults until the move.

Shammer,

Welcome Home! Make sure that you test the new site before killing the old. Not a good idea to just rely on the single backup....keep your options open. If you need any help just yell.

Like most of us, I've learned some things the hard way. My problems transfering my board helped me learn a lot more about phpMyAdmin. :) Fortunately I didn't worry too much about messing things up since I only had a few messages to transfer over. Starting from scratch wouldn't have been a disaster.

I logged in here the day that the board had to be rebuilt. I could swear I heard mumbling and grumbling as the directories were being rebuilt in front of me. :P

Speaking of which, any word on what was going on earlier with the board not being accessible--at least not to me? I could get to my sites and most other sites but not to the TCH homepage or Forums.

Well, I am mostly concerned with keeping the member info so everyone doesn't have to reregister. As for not switching over, might not matter if I do it all at once, my other host has been down all day today. I can't even get my email. Yeah, I am p***ed off right about now. :P I'll probably get the ball rolling tomorrow, if I can even get my data from them. Anyone ever heard of the-webhost.com? Don't use them. :)

Catch-22 situation -- you want to backup your data from your old web site, but they aren't up long enough for you to do it!

I had a similar predictament some time ago with a company I had used to register several domain names. I needed to update the DNS entries for some domains that I had recently moved to TCH. But the web site for the registry company was down for almost 24 hours!

It taught me a lesson -- to make sure I republish my websites first before changing DNS pointers!

Rick,

Regarding the 'apparent' downtime today.....Didn't happen. I think you and I were the only ones that had any problem at all. Mine was definitely in my ISP end somewhere. I was draggin' DSL across the road to the graveyard. I disconnected, reboot, and then all was well. I was in conversation with Nick the whole time and he had NO issues with my site, TCH or the forums. (yeah, and he's on dialup!).

So, mysterious as it was, seems our coincidental problems were just that, coincidental.

That really is odd. I went through a bunch of sites I regularly visit and had no problems. Just an internet burp, I guess. Now I need to jump over to the TCH main page and get hosting for our church. The committee decided to switch and gave me the ok to move it along. Speaking of committees, I saw a new poster on Despair.com that said of committees "None of us is as dumb as all of us." Sometimes too true...:P

all signed up, just gotta get everything switched over tomorrow. Hope you guys are better than my last host, though it sounds like you wil be. :P

By the way, on the page right after you pay, you guys have this "Be sure to register for our User Forums, they are very popular and many answers to your questions van be found there.

"

notice the word van instead of can :)

Doh! Thanks for the heads-up on the typo. Please let us know about them if/when you find more. :P We want to make our site, services and support the best there is.

Welcome Home!

If you need help with the move, please don't hesitate to ask.
