Prospective User Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 I am looking to change hosting companies, and tch is the front-runner. However, I have some questions that I couldn't find clear answers for. 1. Mailman - If I use mailman for mailing lists, is there a limit to the number of list members that receive a message? Will I be accused of spamming if I have a large mailing list? 2. Scripts - I see that there are multiple options for scripts that can be installed from the control panel. I prefer to install my scripts personally. Must I use the version that is installed from the control panel or can I install it myself? For example, if I wanted to install phpBB myself can I, or is that a violation of TOS? 3. .htaccess - are there any limits on the use of .htaccess files? I primarily use mine to change the default index page and prevent bandwidth leeching of images. 4. Bandwidth measurement - my current host does not count FTP uploads against my bandwidth usage? What does tch count against the bandwidth limit? 5. E-Mail - Do the servers support IMAP? Or am I limited to POP3/webmail? 6. FrontPage - Can I disable FP extensions on my site since I don't have any need or desire to use them? 7. awstats - Is my sites logfile parsed automatically by awstats on a daily basis? Thanks. Quote
Lianna Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Let me take a shot at all these: 1. Mailman - If I use mailman for mailing lists, is there a limit to the number of list members that receive a message? Will I be accused of spamming if I have a large mailing list? TCH limits the number of outgoing mail in a certain amount of time, 50 outgoing e-mails every 300 seconds (5 minutes). So, no, large mailing lists will not get you accused of spamming, but you will need to monitor the delivery of those messages to meet the outgoing constraints. Some use Dada Mail (http://mojo.skazat.com/) instead. 2. Scripts - I see that there are multiple options for scripts that can be installed from the control panel. I prefer to install my scripts personally. Must I use the version that is installed from the control panel or can I install it myself? For example, if I wanted to install phpBB myself can I, or is that a violation of TOS? You do not have to use the preinstalls. You may install scripts of your own accord, provided they, themselves are not in violation of TOS or AUP. You will not have access to shell function, so that may limit your ability to install some scripts. 3. .htaccess - are there any limits on the use of .htaccess files? I primarily use mine to change the default index page and prevent bandwidth leeching of images. Not a problem, no limits. 4. Bandwidth measurement - my current host does not count FTP uploads against my bandwidth usage? What does tch count against the bandwidth limit? All traffic is measured against your bandwidth here. 5. E-Mail - Do the servers support IMAP? Or am I limited to POP3/webmail?Yes, IMAP is supported. 6. FrontPage - Can I disable FP extensions on my site since I don't have any need or desire to use them?Absolutely, you can do that from within cPanel. 7. awstats - Is my sites logfile parsed automatically by awstats on a daily basis?Yup, daily. Thanks. No Problem! Good luck with your search. Quote

TCH-Dick Posted January 2, 2004 Posted January 2, 2004 Thanks for the response. Now for another question. Does php run in safe mode or with the open base restriction in effect? SafeMode is OFF and there are no openbase restrictions. http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/help/info.php Quote
