According to the AWStats online glossary:

Glossary

Unique Visitor:

A unique visitor is a host that has made at least 1 hit on 1 page of your web site during the current period shown by the report. If this host make several visits during this period, it is counted only once.

The period shown by AWStats reports is by default the current month.

However if you use AWStats as a CGI you can click on the "year" link to have a report for all the year. In a such report, period is full year, so Unique Visitors are number of hosts that have made at least 1 hit on 1 page of your web site during those year.

I cannot seem to find anywhere on AWStats' site, an explanation for the statement: "Exact value not available in 'Year' view"

I would be a little leary of the year end totals from that page. 744,000+ "unique" is questionale since these numbers are broken down by month and then each month is then added together. you could have the same unique viewer in all 12 months.

Ah, ha! And maybe that's the problem. Perhads AWStats does not maintain a true annual log, so the yearly totals must be interpolated from the monthly results. Completely explains it, but dunno if it's correct.
