bonsaimule Posted December 6, 2003 Posted December 6, 2003 Sometimes I leave my Windows XP pro noSP machine on overnight. The next day the CPU use is 85%-100%. This HLPSVC.EXE file is using all the system resources. I did NOT start it myself. I use Agnitum firewall and i dont download random stuff and ive already scanned my system with spybot search and destroy. I run norton antivirus. So I'm stumped. Any ideas? Quote
natimage Posted December 6, 2003 Posted December 6, 2003 This file isn't normally a virus file. It is a file that runs with Windows XP Help and Support. Maybe the file is corrupt or something like that. I would suggest doing a search of the Microsoft Knowledge Base (even though I hate it)...or maybe start with a google search like, "Hlpsvc.exe file problem" or "Hlpsvc.exe cpu usage". Good luck! borfast Posted December 6, 2003 Posted December 6, 2003 I'm with Tracy, here. A Google search is probably the best place to start. You may also want to turn off the Help and Support service from starting automatically. I can't remember exactly how to do this but if I'm not mistaken, you can right-click "My Computer", select "Manage" and you'll have access to the system's services configuration. Change the Help and Support service start mode from automatic to manual. This way it will not eat up 18 Mb of memory (probably not that much but I remember it consumes *a lot*) every time you start the computer but it will still be accessible. The only difference is that it will take a little longer to start the first time. Quote
