Redirect From Search Engine Hits

Hi all,

Quick dumb question. When I search certain keywords in google, it comes back with pages that are in my web site, not the index/main page. How can I make it so if someone clicks on it they are put to the index page 1st and not somewhere 5 pages deep in my site?

Sorry for the noob question, but I know someone here will be able to "redirect" me to the right answer. hehe. Thanks!

A quick Google search landed me several modifiable options. My search was for

java referrer redirect

Most of what I found was geared toward redirecting if hit from a specific referrer. Seems that the modification of one of those to make it so that the evaluation is based on if the referrer is NOT (from within my domain) then direct to index.html

...but I haven't tried or done it. Basically what I am proposing is that any direct hit to a page within your site would automatically redirect the visitor to the home page....that would also redirect anyone that had a single page of your site bookmarked. There are some pitfalls.

There is a way to do this but if you were to redirect, then the indexed internal page would not be indexed

Most ideal to have as many pages as possible indexed.

Have you optimized your home page for those particular phrases? Do you have all your internal pages linking back to your home page? Do you have external backlinks linking to internal pages? Strong external links linking to internal pages would contribute to internal pages being ranked well (which is a good thing).

If you prefer, have all external backlinks pointing to your home page, not internal pages.

In all honestly, your 'problem' is a good thing. Just make it so one can easily be directed to your home page from all your internal pages.

Good luck.

Welcome Home, Scott! I kept thinking and thinking and thinking to figure out why I thought that sounded like not such a good idea...but I'm not the SEO wiz!

What advice do you have for frames sites? Example. If Google results send you to a page that is actually a body frame page...all the links to the rest of the site are not shown. Obviously, the best recourse is: Don't use frames! But do you have any words of wisdom here?

Thanks.

Thank you for the welcome. As you stated, the obvious answer is do not use frames (any new design should not use frames).

For an established framed site that does not want a redesign, how about a site map link on the 'body' frame. This would allow a spider to continue to crawl. I would also recommend a link back to the home page (thus always feeding PageRank back to the home page).

Hope this helps.
