Seems the folks up in Redmond have decided they are going to stop patching Windows so often. Microsoft says it's going to stop issuing weekly software patches, instead moving to monthly patches except in case of emergency. What do you think about this? Is this a good or bad move by Microsoft? :)

I think that if their software has issues that bother their customers, they should release patches as soon as possible, not weekly nor monthly but as soon as they can.

Of course security related problemas are far more serious but if their software has a bug that prevents their customers from using it like they intended to, it's also pretty serious.

My first comment is that I would be a little suspicious of anything that has to be patched every week to keep it working :)

55 patches, warnings and updates to patches since Jan first, the most in April (8), and the lowest in June (3)

Second thought -

It seems it takes most of the folks who use the security holes a while to exploit them, usually weeks or months after Microsoft announces the patch. So the reduced number of patches might actually help since system admins and individuals won't be bombarded with patches and warnings almost daily and might actually implement the once a month patch and the occasional emergency patch.

The thing I wonder is "Would customers download a patch once per month that's a bazillion bytes (Bb) instead of 20 during the month that are 1 meg each?" Especially the folks still on 56k - won't they just hit cancel when they see a 40 meg download?

Can u imagine? Ugghh, that might be the straw that would break the camel's back and make people switch to Linux or Mac! I'm certainly thinking of doing so if Micro$oft continues its shenanigans.

I was thinking more of the corporate folks. It would be easy for them to push one patch a month through the network than the way it's done now which is for the most part ignoring most of the warnings until it is too late.
