GroovyFish Posted October 4, 2003 Posted October 4, 2003 HI, I am not sure where to put this question, but I figure this is as good a place as any. I already have two accounts with TCH and I think I will be adding one more for my family's retail business. The current hosting company we are using is worthless. I want to get the new site completely setup at TCH before I change the DNS so there basically no downtime. (the holidays are creeping up on me and I don't want to miss an order). We already have an SSL certificate. Will there be a problem to set up the certificate even though it is already set up and active at the other site? Will the SSL certificate work (for testing purposes) even though we will be accessing the site via IP address during testing (before the DNS change and propagation)? I'm going to be setting up OSCommerce. I have played around with it before and I believe in setup it asks if the site is using SSL. I answered no before since I was just playing. Do you think I will have any problems with that before the DNS change...? SSL seriously confuses me, my experience (with the current *awful* host) took 2 weeks and about 15 hours total on the phone with their (ha ha ha ha) tech support only to find out it wasn't ME or the site that was the problem, it was something THEY were doing wrong. (I guess I can give them credit for actually admiting it was their fault). But after that experience, I am at little SSL shy. Thanks for any advice! Groovy *I hope this all makes sense, I know I shouldn't be writing after midnight, blurry eyes and blurry mind. Quote
TCH-Rob Posted October 4, 2003 Posted October 4, 2003 Groovy, I will leave it to the Gurus to confirm but you need to be sure it is the correct Apache SSL before transferring it. You should open a ticket to do the transfer and include your key. You will need to pay the setup fee as well. As for the OSCommerce, I use it and set up my SSL after I had created the site. Piece of cake and I can assist you on where to make the changes. Remember that OSC only uses the SSL after you have entered the cart area and for payments. Works like a charm though. I am not sure how it will work before propagation. Gurus? Quote
GroovyFish Posted October 5, 2003 Author Posted October 5, 2003 Thanks Critical Mass! I will leave it to the Gurus to confirm but you need to be sure it is the correct Apache SSL before transferring it.What does that mean? There are different SSL certificates? The current site is already running on an Apache server, so I guess I should be ok. But I didn't know that there was a difference. As for the OSCommerce, I use it and set up my SSL after I had created the site. Piece of cake and I can assist you on where to make the changes. You may live to regret this statement I will probably need alot of assistance. I have been playing with OSCommerce (on my "play" domain) to see if I can get the hang of it and so far so good, although it will look very OSCommerce like. I have seen some people do really creative things with it, but I am not there yet. SSL is really my only last worry. After my last experience, its the part I dread the most and the part I least understand. Thanks again! Groovy Quote
TCH-Rob Posted October 6, 2003 Posted October 6, 2003 What does that mean? There are different SSL certificates? There are two for Apache; Apache Mod_SSL and Apache OpenSSL. Looks like we have both. I think you will be ok on it. Piece of cake and I can assist you on where to make the changes. You may live to regret this statement I was referring to converting it to SSL, you have to modify a couple of things. After that you are on your own buddy. I will assist any way I can. Quote
