TCH-Alex Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 Can you please try with your own risk Reboot your box, and press ESC to enter the GRUB menu Select the previous version of the kernel xxx. rather than xxx.new - don't select the fail-safe mode. Log-in as your admin user into recovery mode Manually (re)start the upgrade via a terminal session: dpkg --configure -a Quote

mike Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 (edited) Thanks Alex, I'll try that and let you know. It didn't work. I tried a complete clean re-install. no good. I went to terminal to give commands, but the terminal window comes up a blank empty square on the screen and hangs. the pc is an older dell pentium III , 512 mg ram, 900 mhz - from what I can find , that should be fine as far as requirements. mike Posted March 31, 2009 Author Posted March 31, 2009 Ok. I went to appearances, ( because the little 1 inch squares that came on everywhere the mouse sat bugged me ), and all I did was change the effects from NORMAL to NONE. She is now working fine and retrieving 283 updates. Thanks a BUNCH for the help. I am newly trying the Linux family so you will no doubt see me here again. Quote
