Spinland Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 *sigh* Okay, after a hard drive crash I lost the .tlx file I was building my web pages with. As is always the case, I was going to back it up "real soon now." To add to my joy, I didn't have the FTP backup enabled by default, so my search of the web host files was fruitless. Any words of advice/wisdom ere I start importing the existing pages back into CSB one by one? Mad!!! Thanks in advance! Mark Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 As you know cute site builder is like a word processor, so you can't load a web site into it. But since have been through it once, it will easier this time. You can have your web site open in a browser and cute site builder open at the same time. Then create or modify the same template, and copy and paste text, links and images from the browser. And you can view the source to copy and paste any scripts or html you have inserted, look for the <!-- Start Gem Insert your own HTML --> markers. I know you are aware of this, but this is to help others. The ftp backup is one way to keep a backup, but it will slow down the every day publishing, so most leave it off, and use it after major changes. If you have a second drive or CD recorder, it is a more convient place for a backup. Most of us have been through this, and for me I use a script for kw's cutesite support site to make an automatic backup to a backup folder, on a second drive. I guess the most important thing is to save in your document folder rather that the programs own folder as is the default. If you zip up the .tlx file it may fit on a floppy. I still do that and save it on a second drive, and upload it to a backup folder on site, whenever there are major changes. Before you try your new version be sure to publish to a sub folder until you are happy with it, so your current site will still be there for others to see. Good luck, and if you need help just holler Quote
Head Guru Posted August 2, 2003 Posted August 2, 2003 Do you still have access to the hard drive or has it been thrown away? If you still have the drive I own some very expensive software recovery software here at TCH. It has worked wonders for us! I would be more than happy to attempt to recover any data you lost. All I ask is you pay shipping to and from. PM me if I can be of any help. Thanks Quote
Spinland Posted August 7, 2003 Author Posted August 7, 2003 The re-build went quite easily, as you suggested it might. I took the opportunity to clean up the original template design (I'd hacked it together ad hoc while learning the program) and add some enhancements. Using the originals in a browser was a great idea, and in many cases I was able just to copy and paste major text blocks right back into CSB. Using the 'view->source' feature of the browser gave me access to all the inserted Gem stuff, and viola. Thanks! Guru, offer is so very much appreciated but, as you thought, the drive had already left the building. You guys rock! Rock Sign Mark Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 7, 2003 Posted August 7, 2003 You are welcome Mark, Now I am sure you have made a back up and put it on your site Thumbs Up (going off line to make a back up my self) Quote
Spinland Posted August 7, 2003 Author Posted August 7, 2003 ... and a second back-up on a Zip disk. Never Again! Whip Quote
TCH-Don Posted August 7, 2003 Posted August 7, 2003 Yup, been there, first time I lost 7 years of data, so me too, never again. I have a second hard drive, and two cdrw backup sets. One I take to my neighbors to keep safe. Call me paranoid, but never again Dance Quote
