Ray_Bman Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 I noticed in one of my domains Cpanel Awstats report page there is a section called "Authenticated users (Top 10)" which has a username that I have never heard of. None of my other accounts has a username listed in this section, they only say "Other logins (and/or anonymous users)" and then list the numbers for pages, hits, etc. Does anyone know how this username possibly got there? Did someone hack into my account? I definitely never used such a username, and I don't even know what this "Authenticated users" section is used for or represents. Any tips would be appreciated, Ray Quote
TCH-Andy Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 Basically they are users who have 'logged in' to a password protected area of your site. One 'feature' with awstats is that if someone tries to 'login' on a page that doesn't need it ( eg http: //me@yoursite.com ) then, since there was no error / rejection, awstats would log 'me' as an authenticated user. TCH-Carl Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 If somebody visits your site by typing http://testusername:testpassword@www.yoursite.com it is the same with visiting http://www.yoursite.com but in the logs he appears as an authenticated user, with username "testusername" and password "testpassword" Maybe there are some worms or users trying to authenticate, where authentication is not required. I don't think this is something you have to worry about. But kindly make sure that you are using the latest release of all scripts on your account just to be on the safe side. Block the IP using cpanel if you are not comfortable <_> Quote
Ray_Bman Posted November 15, 2007 Author Posted November 15, 2007 The username I see listed is one I never created, but it doesn't mean they have access to my cpanel, correct? Ray Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted November 15, 2007 Posted November 15, 2007 From the responses given that is correct. They don't have access to your cPanel. Quote
Ray_Bman Posted November 15, 2007 Author Posted November 15, 2007 Thanks for all your responses. I can sleep soundly tonight. Quote
