WhateverJames Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 Hello all. I was referred by Camppain to check out this site for webhosting. I used to have (still do, somewhat) Yahoo/Geocities which explains a lot without saying much as to why I've switched. But the main reason for the move is I've forgotten my Yahoo password and they say my login info doesn't match (zip, country, etc). After begging them to verify my "billing" info, instead of my login info that I entered over a year ago just to have email/chat (without knowing I'd start a website eventually), they still refused to help me out. There's no support from Yahoo/Geocities, which after reading a webhosting forum, this is well known. I just wish I had known a year ago when I started paying (gasp) $8.95 a month for decent speeds, not much space, and of course Geocities/Yahoo "wonderful" support. I still need to find a way to cancel my Geocities account (their website says you have to be logged in to do this). Without even cancelling the Geocities account first, after seeing the silver plan that is offered here, I signed up for a year and got a domain name w/privacy (that I won't lose, unlike my Geocities domain name). This will be my second or third website and I'm still somewhat new to this format and the control panel is a big change, so go easy on me if I have any questions. The initial setup seems a little more complex to me, but it's not a bad thing because I realize it will all pay off and there are more options to play with. My questions for right now is that I have signed up for the website hosting last night, so it takes 24-48 hours before I can start uploading? (not complaining) When this is completed, will I be notified? When I want to upload files, I go directly to the control panel by typing mydomainname.com:2082? Thanks. Quote
TCH-Patty Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 Hello Whateverjames! What is your domain name and I will find out when your account will be provisoned. Regards, Patty Quote
WhateverJames Posted January 2, 2003 Author Posted January 2, 2003 Hi sicilychick. The new domain name is systemsilence.com Quote
TCH-Patty Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 Whateverjames, Looks like were still waiting for payment on the account. Have you already paid via creditcard payment? Thank you Quote
WhateverJames Posted January 2, 2003 Author Posted January 2, 2003 Honestly, I don't recall entering in the credit card number for the webhosting like I did for the domain name. I didn't get a confirmation email for the webhosting order. Do you think maybe the order didn't go through somehow? Thank you for helping. Quote
TCH-Patty Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 You should have gotten a email confirming your order. In that email is a link to pay for the hosting. Simply click on the link and you will be sent to the credit card payment screen.. Once you make your payment post here again and I will rush your account thru the setup process. Thank you Quote
WhateverJames Posted January 2, 2003 Author Posted January 2, 2003 I didn't get the email for the webhosting but I did get billed for the domain name registration, at secureserver.net. Should I try ordering webhosting again? Quote
TCH-Patty Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 Yes. I have cancelled your first request. Go ahead and order again this time just follow the link to the credit card payment gateway. Thanks Quote
WhateverJames Posted January 2, 2003 Author Posted January 2, 2003 Alright! Everything seemed to work and I got an email. Quote
TCH-Patty Posted January 2, 2003 Posted January 2, 2003 Ok once your paid up, I will place a rush on your account setup. We are just about 11 hours out on new setups. I think I can get you down before 6pm however. Thanks Quote
CAMPPAIN Posted January 4, 2003 Posted January 4, 2003 Sup James! The service and support on here is really good and the forum is a great idea. The c panel confused the hell out of me too cause my previous host had an online site builder. If you need help IM me or start a topic on here, or check out the ones I started should help Quote
kellybellydotnet Posted January 4, 2003 Posted January 4, 2003 Hello from another ***** newbie who recently made the switch from Yahoo Webhosting! Unfortunately, I don't have any advice to help you out. Sorry. I'm sure you'll like it here much better though. I sure do! Quote
CAMPPAIN Posted January 5, 2003 Posted January 5, 2003 Hey Kelly nice photographs! I liive near you.......... That is all. Quote
WhateverJames Posted January 5, 2003 Author Posted January 5, 2003 Thanks for taking the time to help me out, Sicilychick Hi Kellybelly. I'm like it here more already. And I don't even have my site up yet. Hey Lourans. I'm having trouble uploading files to the site. Actually, I can upload but they're not showing up when I upload them to the 'www' folder. Any clue on what to do? I search for the topics you started. I'll send you an IM if i'm still having trouble Quote
Lianna Posted January 5, 2003 Posted January 5, 2003 www directory is just a forward to public_html directory, which is where you need to be uploading your files. What app/method are you using for upload? L Quote
WhateverJames Posted January 5, 2003 Author Posted January 5, 2003 I'm using the Cpanel, but I don't think it's working right. If I click on the public_html folder, nothing really happens. It doesn't switch to that folder. If I upload a file, it just goes on the main page of the file manager and not into that folder. When the index.html file is uploaded, it looks like this on my file manager screen. These are the folders: public_html 444 tmp 700 www 444 Create New File .contactemail 0 k 644 .lastlogin 0 k 644 index.html <--- This is the file I uploaded. It seems I can upload but it's just going to the wrong folder, even if I click on public_html. If I try to upload by FTP, it says error 550 permission denied. I can log on just fine, but not upload. Thanks for any help. Quote
TCH-Don Posted January 5, 2003 Posted January 5, 2003 Are you clicking on the word public_html or the icon of the folder just to its left? Clicking on the icon will allow changing to that folder. Clicking on the name will allow you to delete or rename or change permissions. hope this helps Quote
WhateverJames Posted January 5, 2003 Author Posted January 5, 2003 Thanks turtle. I thought I had tried clicking the icon but I guess I didn't Next problem! When I try to upload a file through Cpanel, it says 550 permission denied. and when i go to http://66.246.43.132/~jamesh it says Forbidden. Quote
CAMPPAIN Posted January 6, 2003 Posted January 6, 2003 Try resetting your security preferences James. When I messed around with my internet security options I couldn't even log into my site. Tru the default settings see if that works. Quote
WhateverJames Posted January 7, 2003 Author Posted January 7, 2003 (edited) Thanks Lourans. So for everything's working now. And thank you to everyone who helped me get things movin'. Edited January 7, 2003 by WhateverJames Quote
