limestone_cowboy Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Greetings to all; I'm new. Classic situation: My wife leaves tomorrow morning for a business trip and it is late. I'm afraid her hard drive is ill or gone. It is an Inspiron 300 laptop, and will not boot into windows. (XP) I get an 1000-0146 error message during diagnostics, and a 1-4-6 beep count. I've reseated the hard drive, but see no difference. I'm tempted to drive half an hour to where I can borrow an XP CD, in hopes that there will be something worthwhile left on the drive once I'm up and running. Any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance. Mike btw, this error code and Google brought me to this site! Quote
TCH-Andy Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Welcome to the forums Mike It sounds like it may be a RAM problem from the beep codes. Will it boot OK from a CD? Quote
Madmanmcp Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Try reseating the memory cards. Some laptops have a compartment located on the bottom of the laptop which can be opened by removing one or two screws. Take the card(s) out and put them back in. Sometimes this will corect the problem. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 I have been down the same road with my Dell and the beep codes you received is not your standard BIOS beep code. You will notice that the beep code matches the last part of the error code you received. This code is telling you that there were errors with the Disk Self Test and 99% of the time this is due to a bad drive. Quote
