Hello,

I am trying to use the 'counter' option on Cpanel. When I try to actually generate the code onscreen, that works. but when I try to save and finish, it just hangs and never finishes.

How can I make it work?

Hello der -

I snuck in and peeked at your account. Everything was ok cept, the name of the counter. Im not sure why cpanel trys to auto name your counter but it does.

I just renamed it to mycounter and BANG worked first try.

Here is the HTML sniplet for you, save you a trip back to your control panel!

<img src="/cgi-sys/Count.cgi?df=mycounter.dat|display=Counter|ft=6|md=5|frgb=100;139;216|dd=A">

ENJOY!

Hey, know I get a "unable to open mycounter.dat" message. Do the file attributes need to be changed to allow update?

What permissions (i.e. the three numbers to the far right of the file) does mycounter.dat have?

I am still getting used to cpanel-- where can I check the file attributes?

Just click on the File Manager link on the upper left of the CPanel page.

I couldn't find a 'mycounter.dat' file anywhere. So I tried creating the path referenced from my root (var/cpanel/Counters) and the file with permissions of 666.

Still doesn't work.

Can someone look at my site and figure out what is missing??

Fixed.

I recreated a new counter for you called test

Remember you dont put the .dat after the name of the counter.

I also took the liberty to correct it on your index.html page.

So you are Fixed.

Thanks and welcome aboard!

Great! Thanks for your help!

I have two more questions.

1) How can I I'm impatient so I violated the Forum Guidelines: Family Members may not bump threads. up my hit counter? I want to inlcude the old hit totals. I tried using the 'commit' part of the counter generator and that doesn't work...

2) I presume my Index page needs to be in the public_html directory, right?

TIA,

Eric

Your correct on the index.html thing. If you place anything outside of this folder it wont be viewable.

Now your counter issue.

You should be able to go into your control panel and click on the counter link.

Then at the bottom you would:

where it says counter name enter this:

test (DONT ENTER .DAT)

then where it say new count enter your new total

That should do it.

If not let me know, cause I got a special can of counter whooop *** for it!

I tried that. it never comes back when I click the commit button. Have to kill the IE window, in fact.

I am trying to set it to 4031-- be sure to shake that can thoroughly!
