Notice to all Cox Communications BroadBand Users - Cox starts blocking port 25 (smtp port).

"Recently, Cox Communications began requiring all users of their high-speed internet services to use the Cox SMTP settings for all outgoing mail, regardless of whether users have their own "vanity" domain names or hosting that offers outgoing mail services. Therefore, if you are using an email client, like "Outlook" or "Eudora", and are a Cox High Speed Internet customer, you will have to change your outgoing mail server to reflect the regional SMTP settings for your Cox account. For more information, see http://support.cox.net/custsup/email/email_info.shtml. This link will send you to the Cox Communications Support page, where you can find the details of this new requirement, as well as links on how to reset your email client."

Certainly other ISP's, like Cox, may block port 25 in the future. Just sometrhing to be aware of. Verizon DSL implemented similar change, requiring enabling of outgoing SMTP authentication back in Sept, 2002.

I contacted Cox a couple of days before these post about not being able to send mail using my *Vanity Domain*. The support rep didn't tell me anything about being able to change the SMTP. She said the only way was to upgrade to a Business Account( DOUBLE my present cost as a home user). I told her I may just have to check out a DSL account with some one else, she laughed and said *SO, go ahead*. Cox is the only cable provider here and all the DSL providers also block port 25. I will change the SMTP setting. Thanks guys.

OMG! Curtis, you mean that Cox would let you use your own outgoing mail server if you upgraded to a different plan?????? Oh, man! What a way to make money! "We're gonna block port 25 and anybody that wants it un-blocked can pay us double!"

:D Sound like something Bell would do, too!
