Umasan Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Hi There! Just moved in a few days ago and have a few newbie questions about emails and spamming. We made the mistake of putting our real addy into the default email spot. After recieving spam mail all morning that looks like it's from us we learned from the posts here at TCH that we should put FAIL as our default. Done deal. Thanks Forum for your tips! Our spam has slowed back down to it's normal crawl. whew. But now we have dumb question #1 and dumber questions #2 and #3 and #4. #1. The spammers used names we don't have set up, such as info@****, advertisement, webmaster, account, etc. With the spam being instantly deleted, how will we know if a name we will want to use has already been stolen by the spam people? If we set up a name such as me@**** and they already have stolen it, will we be able to make it or will the email program tell us that there's already an email with that name? How awful if we make the name that they've already got their teeth into and then our email really will be sending out spam. #2. Is it possible to change our user name in Cpanel so that our name is easier to remember? #3. If we change our user name into domainname will the spammers attack us even more?? #4. Do we need to bother with Squirrel mail etc if we already have an isp mail? Umasan hmmm, what does Guided Mode Off mean? Also the Plus and Minus signs, what do they mean? Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted March 17, 2006 Posted March 17, 2006 Welcome to the forums Umasan 1. You won't know if they are spamming an email address until you set it up. 2. No, your cpanelname is automatically generated and will not be changed unless it happens to be something vulger. A difficult to remember name is a security plus making it harder for someone to break into your account. 3. Won't matter, if you have a domain you are going to get spammed and you can't get your name changed anyway. 4. If you don't want to use Squirrel mail you don't have to. There is no setup required to use it anyway. You just log in with your email address and password to read you mail in a web browser. If you have more questions just ask. Quote

TCH-Bruce Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 You can set up your email client to send/receive email from your domain. See the email help pages. Quote

TCH-Rob Posted March 18, 2006 Posted March 18, 2006 To elaborate on this question a bit more. #1. The spammers used names we don't have set up, such as info@****, advertisement, webmaster, account, etc. With the spam being instantly deleted, how will we know if a name we will want to use has already been stolen by the spam people? It can not be taken from you. Your domain is yours and any email you create for it is yours. Just because they are sending to or as a specific name does not mean they have taken it. If we set up a name such as me@**** and they already have stolen it, will we be able to make it or will the email program tell us that there's already an email with that name? See response above. How awful if we make the name that they've already got their teeth into and then our email really will be sending out spam. You will not be sending it. When someone sends an email as if it were coming from your account, the thing that people look at are the headers and the IP address the email is coming from, not the domain name itself. You have nothing to worry about if you are not sending it yourself. Hope it helps. Quote
